Amos 7:10

Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.

Amos 7:10 exposes the response of impenitent Israel to God's invitation to seek good and live, with by far the greater number refusing to profit from it. The words of God's messengers were contrary to their evil desires, and for that reason they rejected the invitation. Amos's message was one of warning and rebuke, so directly opposed to what impenitent Israel desired that it provoked hostility rather than repentance. Amaziah, the idolatrous priest at Bethel, therefore accused Amos to the ruler in Israel of conspiring against him in the midst of the house of Israel. He sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel that Amos had plotted against him among the people, and he insisted that the land was not able to bear all his words and could not endure them.
