Amos 7:11
For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
The utterance came as a final decree after predicted judgments had been temporarily stayed, during the long reign of Jeroboam II when Israel gained signal military victories and enjoyed a time of apparent prosperity. That mercy produced no change in impenitent hearts, so exile and judgment were divinely fixed as punishment for continued impenitence. It declares as divinely determined that Israel would surely be led away captive into exile out of its own homeland. It declares that Jeroboam would die a violent death by the sword.
It is a bold, plain utterance directed against both the nation and its king. Its terrible sentence was lost on the king and people and left them unmoved, revealing how far they had gone in impenitence.
It provoked Amaziah, a leader among the idolatrous priests at Bethel, to command Amos to flee into Judah and stop prophesying at Bethel because it was the king's chapel and court. To that command Amos firmly answered by repeating that Israel would surely go into captivity.
