Amos 7:17
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
The decree came after the long reign of Jeroboam II, when the armies of Israel gained signal victories in a time of outward and apparent prosperity. Yet that prosperity brought no change of heart, and the impenitent people did not return to God. At that time Amaziah stood as a leader among the idolatrous priests at Bethel. He ordered Amos to flee into the land of Judah to eat bread and earn his living and to prophesy there, and never to prophesy at Bethel again, because Bethel was the king's chapel and sanctuary and court.
The verse is Amos's firm answer in reply, a bold and plain word repeating God's decree against the nation and its king. The decree foretold that Israel would surely go into captivity forth out of its own land. The decreed judgment also declared that Jeroboam would die by the sword. Even this terrible sentence left the king and people unmoved, and its boldness was lost upon them because they had gone so far in impenitence.
