Amos 8:12
And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.
The famine foretold is not a lack of bread or water but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord. It will be fulfilled in the final time of trouble after mercy has ended, at the close of time when the Lord walks through the earth in judgment and the fearful plagues begin to fall.
Those who wander and run to and fro are the multitudes who long and repeatedly rejected God's mercy, slighted and despised His word, and lightly esteemed it as spoken through His servants. They are those who prized earthly riches and pleasures and miserly hoarded wealth above salvation and heavenly treasure, who rejected Jesus and despised His saints, and who professed the truth without living it. By that time God's ministers will have finished their last work, offered their last prayers and shed their last bitter tears for a rebellious church and an ungodly people, and given their last solemn warning.
They will then wander urgently and desperately from place to place, from sea to sea and from north to east, to seek the word of the Lord and a word of approval from God. What they seek includes consolation, an explanation of the way of salvation, and a hopeful word, prayer, or exhortation from ministers, but they will not find it. Even offering houses and lands and miserly hoarded money will obtain no consolation, and they must hunger and thirst on in vain with thirst never quenched, remaining in their chosen condition without the mercy they rejected, because their cases are decided and eternally fixed. Because that time will be so fearful and awful, it is urgent now to prize the word and to gather souls who will prize the truth.
