Amos 9:9
For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth. For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.
God commanded the scattering of the house of Israel among all nations as judgment on the sinful kingdom for its apostasy, to destroy it from the face of the earth, yet without utterly destroying the house of Jacob. In that sifting into captivity not even the least true grain would fall to the earth and be lost, while all the sinners of His people who claimed evil would not overtake them would die by the sword and perish. The same sifting is a present testing and purifying of His professed people, in which as corn in a sieve all chaff is separated from the pure kernels until none of the faithful is lost. As the sieve moves it brings hidden corruption to light and reveals true character, separating the self-righteous, the corrupt who reject correction, and those who take sides with Satan from the humble, trusting, obedient people whom God cleanses and prepares as clean and holy. Even in severe trial and temptation when Satan works hardest to destroy them, not one faithful grain is lost but each is tested and refined like gold seven times purified until those who abide in Christ stand firm and are fitted for translation.
Israel Sifted Among Nations
The prophecy is aimed at the sinful kingdom of the ten tribes for its impenitent apostasy begun with the strange altars at Bethel and Dan. The eyes of the Lord are upon that sinful kingdom to destroy it from off the face of the earth, yet He will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob. His judgment comes by His command to sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve.
That sifting is a scattering of the people among the nations into captivity, commanded by God Himself. Even in that scattering He preserves His own, with the promise that not even the least grain, not the least true grain, shall fall upon the earth and be lost. While the faithful grain is thus preserved, all the sinners of His people who say that evil shall not overtake nor prevent them shall die by the sword and perish.
Sifting Purifies God's People
The sifting commanded in the verse is now taking place as a testing and proving of God's people. It is a present time of scouring and purifying, a time of warfare and trial in days of darkness and peril. In that time the plain and pointed testimony must do a prominent work against multitudes of sleeping teachers who prophesy smooth things and cry peace and leave the people asleep and at ease.
As corn is sifted in a sieve, God's people are sifted until all the chaff is separated from the pure kernels of grain. His discerning eye detects the smallest particle of chaff, and the work requires close dealing. Yet every true kernel is preserved so that none is lost. He is leading out a peculiar people to purify and cleanse them and fit them for translation, separating every carnal thing from His peculiar treasure.
The sifting tests and separates His professed people as He leads them in a humble, cross-bearing way. It brings hidden corruption to light. Those who are self-righteous, unsound in faith, or unwilling to be led with His people are left behind, while He preserves the faithful and prepares a clean, holy people. As the sieve moves, corrupt people who reject correction and cherish evil separate from the trusting, self-denying people. That separation reveals each person's true character and the company to which they belong, and approaching judgment will make the outcome plain.
The church must be purged, and God provides a way to preserve it. Honest people deceived by the corrupt will be given light and shown the truth they need. The sifting is His work and should not be resisted or asked to stop, lest the church retain corrupt members and come under displeasure. The purging removes selfish and covetous principles, fraud, injustice, and false principles. Those who bear His name must be cleansed and changed in character to practice righteousness and show heaven's principles in life. Judgment is deferred so His professed people can prepare to meet Him in peace and enter His city.
The sifting is a present test of faithfulness that exposes true character and separates those who take sides with Satan from those who stand with Christ. It comes at a time when iniquity abounds and many grow cold in love, when those who have not valued or followed the light are separated out while the genuine remain strongest. The faithful are not lost, and the nearness of the end makes earnest prayer necessary. The image is applied to the shaking time in which those who do not meet the gospel standard and are without practical godliness are shaken off so wheat is distinguished from chaff. Those who cherish dissatisfaction and spread accusations against those advancing His work and who oppose the third angel's message are shaken out, while the faithful who love that message are prepared for translation.
The same testing was applied locally in Jackson, where He was testing the church and would separate anyone who rebelled so the faithful could move forward. In severe trials and temptations when Satan works hard to destroy His people, not one faithful grain is lost. The sifting tests and refines them like gold in a furnace until each stands like gold seven times purified. It does not mean they are abandoned or ultimately overcome, because Christ lives and sustains those who abide in Him. Those who stand firm are sure of victory, which calls for looking to Christ for an example and imitating the humble pattern, fitting them for translation.
