Colossians 3:3

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

To be dead means the old earthly, sinful, self-centered life is ended, with self forgotten and yielded to God, and to be hidden means the true life is now joined in close union with Christ in God with affections set on things above. Christ himself is that life, for he alone has original unborrowed life and believers live only as they continually derive life from him by faith. This death and hidden life are entered through repentance, conversion and baptism as burial to sin and the world and resurrection to new obedient life. The hidden life transforms character after Christ's likeness by the Holy Spirit, putting off anger, malice, impurity and selfishness and putting on mercy, humility, meekness, forgiveness and love in humble daily obedience with self kept out of sight. That life is kept secure in God through trial, suffering and death, and when Christ who is the life appears, those hidden with him will appear with him in glory clothed with immortality.

Death to Old Life

Those risen with Christ are dead to the former earthly, worldly, sinful, self-centered life, and their true life is kept hidden with Christ in God. This death means self forgotten and ownership yielded to God, with affections, mind, heart and intellect set on heavenly things where Christ sits at God's right hand rather than on earthly things. It is lived by seeking things above, pursuing victory not in human strength but through help of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and separating from sin and selfishness during probation while preparing for immortal life and appearing with Christ in glory. Seeking what is above brings the Holy Spirit and the mind of Christ, seen in sanctification and works of righteousness as fruits of faith purifying the whole person.

Being dead requires mortifying earthly members — fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil desire, covetousness which is idolatry — for which wrath comes on the disobedient. It requires putting off the old man with his deeds: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech and lying. It requires putting on the new man renewed in knowledge after the image of the Creator, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free but Christ is all and in all. That new clothing is mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance and forgiveness even as Christ forgave, and above all charity which is the bond of perfectness, with the peace of God ruling, thankfulness, the word dwelling richly, and obedience in word and deed in the name of the Lord Jesus, lived in restoring and lifting up rather than lying against truth by works or nullifying the prayer for God's will to be done by acting for self-advantage at a neighbor's disadvantage. This instruction belongs to the church to the end of time, and wrongs must be sternly resisted and cleansed from the soul in order to appear with Christ who is the life when He appears in glory.

The death is a present new state before God transforming the entire being, not a past conversion to rest upon, kept by a soul firmly united to Christ, trusting Him every moment and kept pure by divine grace. In the born-again person old things are emptied from the heart and no longer seen in the life: quick impatient temper, hate, envy, revenge, retaliation, pride of heart, emulation, and seeking for supremacy. Remaining dead and hidden requires watching unto prayer with faith and works against a strong undercurrent and a tempting devil pulling back to sin and the natural passions of the unrenewed heart. The hidden life does not cancel or lessen the law's call to holiness in every part of life, and refusing this dying to self leaves a person in unbelief and lawbreaking. It stands against philosophy and vain deceit after human tradition, stands in contrast to lukewarm worldliness and self-exaltation, quenches ambition to be superior and first, ends pulling others down to stand at the top, divests of selfishness and self-glorification, rules out a narrow self-centered life, and directs all abilities and influence to service rather than selfish gratification in connection with overcoming.

To be dead is to be dead to the world, to pleasing self, to vanity and levity and trifling conversation, and to pursuing earthly objects and appearance for personal pleasure, and this death must be shown by the life. Affections must be withdrawn from earthly treasure and set on heavenly treasure, for those hidden do not belong to the world and cannot enjoy its friendship while united to Christ. This contrasts with pride, devotion to self, loving pleasure more than God, and trusting in worldly success, riches or position, as shown by the difficulty of giving up wealth even when eternal life is offered. To have life hidden is to be submerged in Christ drawing sustenance and support from Him as present help in every need, keeping His sacrifice, redeeming love and precious grace in the thoughts, speaking of Him with gratitude and praise, sensing personal weakness and corruption and vileness by nature rather than merely formal religion, living by faith on the Son of God, panting after assurance of God's love valued above fine gold, reaching after pardon, peace, righteousness and true holiness with conversation in heaven while looking for the Saviour, transformed by converse with God and contemplation of things above, tested by self-examination in the Word. When self no longer rules or reacts readily to irritation, petty offenses are passed over as unworthy of notice and focus rests on eternal things rather than trials of this life, and those truly living this have made calling and election sure and will appear with Christ who is their life when He appears.

The change is presented as a death so striking that it marks complete transformation, evidenced by fruits, and without that experience a person must seek the Lord wholeheartedly. It requires coming out of a voluntarily taken wrong course into the light instead of fortifying self with excuses and self-justification that will not stand in judgment, choosing to walk in the light rather than wandering in darkness gathering darkness about the soul, pleasing the enemy and grieving the Spirit, being right with God, sanctified, elevated and thoroughly furnished unto all good works, especially urgent because the time is solemn. It requires thorough conversion with Christ as foundation, deciding fully for the Lord and no longer halting between two opinions, breaking Satan's holding power, and building character that will stand storm and tempest in self-denying purity uncorrupted even with bad examples on all sides, refusing worldly habits with moral courage to live as God's child.

Life Hidden in Christ

The verse calls those risen with Christ to seek the things above where Christ sits at God's right hand, and to set affection, mind, heart and intellect on heavenly rather than earthly things. This upward setting of affection rests on a hope that holds firm through sickness, trial and bereavement, and it is bound to baptismal life, victory sought not in human strength but through help of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and instruction that prepares for immortal life. Putting away earthly sins belongs with it, putting off the old man with anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech and lying, and putting on the new man renewed in knowledge after his Creator's image where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free but Christ is all and in all, clothed as God's elect with mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance, forgiveness even as Christ forgave, and above all charity as the bond of perfectness.

Christ himself is the believer's life, and when he who is the life appears those hidden with him will appear with him in glory. That appearing is as exalted overcomers clothed with immortality, and it gives motive for faithful service and directs present life with future immortal life in view. Human life is derived and dependent, received from Jesus who alone has original, unborrowed, underived life as the fountain of life, while people have only a streamlet from that fountain which the Giver takes back to himself. To have life hidden is therefore to derive life from him now and to devote every capability and God-given ability to sanctified service, for life is found in Christ alone.

A life hid with Christ in God is oneness, union, abiding and close fellowship with Christ, joined by hidden links to power above all principalities and powers. By yielding the will the life is placed in Christ in God, God at once takes possession of the yielded will and works in the person to will and to do his good pleasure, bringing the whole nature and even the thoughts under control of Christ's Spirit. Strength from God holds fast to his strength and makes a new life of living faith possible, but only as the human will keeps cooperating with God and not with evil influences, refusing to follow associates through whom Satan seeks to ensnare. This hidden life is lived by faith on the Son of God, panting after assurance of God's love, valuing his grace above fine gold, reaching after pardon, peace, righteousness and true holiness with conversation in heaven while looking for the Saviour. It is grounded in his strength and shaped by his spirit and manner of work, bound up with Christ's life in God's eternal life, kept secure in God and sustained by his life so believers live because he lives, changed from sin to purity with words and actions bearing fruit of the new nature.

Like a desert palm rooting deep to hidden waters stays green and vigorous though sky is as brass and burning sand beats about its roots, so the hidden life is Christ within as a well of water springing up to everlasting life, drawing continually from the fountain. Faith like rootlets penetrates beneath seen things to draw life continually, and that secret supply keeps the Christian fresh, loyal and vigorous amid corruption and ridicule, true to God under Christ's righteousness, with elevating influence guiding weary souls perishing in sin's desert to living water. Close connection makes spiritually strong to withstand wrong influences, so society of unbelievers sought only to labor for and win them does no harm while Christlike character is kept and God's companionship sought. The unseen inner life woven with God's life is not discerned by the world because spiritual things are spiritually discerned, so its value, motives, hidden power of truth and glory of Christ in it remain unknown to worldly minds at enmity with God. Hence humble, conscientious, self-denying, zealous Christians with firm steadfast character are regarded as narrow, bigoted, exclusive and fanatic, and meet accusation, misrepresentation, hatred and tribulation, standing at variance with the world as light is to darkness.

To have life hidden is to be hidden like Moses in the cleft of the Rock so God's glory can be beheld. This close relation, opening the heart's door to bring soul, body and spirit under heavenly principles, daily crucifying self, warring against inclination and perverse temperament, exercising the regenerated faculties and looking to Jesus for strength in every emergency, forms a character built after Christ's pattern who met every temptation without yielding in full heavenly perfection. Such character constitutes fitness to see God, for hearts purified through the Spirit's indwelling can know God and behold his majesty and love, whereas his glorious presence brings death to the ungodly. Christ himself was hidden in God in his human life, not seeking display through noisy disputes, showy worship or acts for applause, but quietly revealing the Father's character and directing minds to see that revelation and give worship to God. His revelation came gently like morning light dispelling darkness to bring life and healing, so the enemy found no place in his heart to plant evil and could gain no advantage.

The one who feeds on Christ has the Saviour's life in him so he may die as Christ died yet his life remains hid with Christ in God now and into eternal life. Christ carries on the process making believers one with him in present life and one with him in eternal life, united with his life, until he raises them at the last day as part of himself. Believers take Christ's words into the heart and obey them as healthy branches of the living vine living by him, keeping his commandments and abiding in his love as Christ kept his Father's commandments and abides in his love. Entering like the merchant who sold all for the pearl, laying down all to partake of the divine nature escaped from corruption through lust, they feed the spiritual being on truth as it is in Christ with living faith, which alone honors truth and secures Christlike character reflecting his image, arriving at knowledge of God only by knowing Christ's character through the regenerating Spirit. That hidden inward motive power, the love of Jesus with redeeming power conquering entire being, soul, body and spirit, masters every other motive and lifts above corrupting worldly influences, keeping eternal realities rather than eating, drinking and worldly goods in view, so the world cannot know this class; Christ's life within gives life to the whole person as blood gives life to the body, shown in unity rather than rivalry, jealousy, self-exaltation or dissension, and clothes with the robe of Christ's righteousness.

Connection with Christ makes God's will the will, sanctifies body, soul and spirit, and forms day by day a holy character fit for heaven where nothing defiling enters. It brings happiness and joy in the Lord the more heaven is thought of, walking with God as Enoch did with angels given charge every hour so the wicked one cannot overcome, faith, peace and joy increased by talking faith, with right to lift the head and rejoice because the Lord soon comes to be seen as he is, beheld as King in beauty and likened to him. This union is consistent with perfect liberty, for God's law preserves freedom and its restraint is unfelt within duty's sphere, while breaking it brings loss of liberty; genuine freedom comes through glad willing obedience rooted in love, lived as Christ lived the law in health and activity of every spiritual energy, uplifted in prayer like a flower to light above low cares into health under the Sun of Righteousness with increasing usefulness prepared for mansions. Death ending all ambitious projects forces the question whether the soul is hid, calling to see again the nobler world, behold eternity's threshold flushed with glory, put the world subordinate, and use time to secure heavenly treasure and cultivate enduring fruit. Christ as the believer's life calls each person to trust God and stay faithful to truth and conscience even when family opposition makes it costly, looking to appear with him in glory.

Baptism and Conversion

Baptism pledges and enters death to the old life and the new life hidden with Christ in God, signifying burial with him and death to sin and the world in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and resurrection through divine power. Going down into the water pledges separation from the enemy and service to God with heaven-given power and grace to resist temptation, and rising represents the resurrection of Christ. The covenant is to die to world and selfishness and to live a new obedient life, remaining dead and no longer following worldly methods and practices but coming out and being separate, while heaven pledges strength, grace, wisdom and victory. Being dead ends the old life of fornication, uncleanness, evil desire, covetousness which is idolatry, anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech and lying, and being hidden means being pledged to represent the life of Christ, to seek things above where Christ sits at God's right hand and set affection on things above not on earth, to put off the old man and put on the new man renewed in knowledge after the image of the Creator, and to practice mercy, kindness, humbleness, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance, forgiveness as Christ forgave, charity, peace, thankfulness, and obedience in word and deed in the name of the Lord Jesus. The hidden life is Christ who is the life, held by experimental knowledge of the Father and Jesus Christ as an abiding Saviour of more value than ten thousand worlds and upheld by divine power working against the powers of darkness, remaining unseen in worldly striving but to be revealed in glory when Christ appears, when the sanctified soul made one with him will meet him with joy enshrouded in exceeding brightness with ten thousand times ten thousand angels and thousands of thousands coming in the clouds of heaven.

What it means to be dead and hidden must be learned by experience and demonstrated in conduct not contradicting truth, otherwise profession is empty and religious activity serves self. Those pledged in baptism are to be dead to sin, self, pride, vanity, outward display and the world and to live a new life with affections set on heavenly things, making that purpose visible in life and public work for the good of self and others. This calls for self-examination whether the Christ-centered life is truly lived or sin and worldly concerns are still indulged, with heed to Christ's counsel to Laodicea and alert earnest appreciation of the promise. The instruction stands for the church to the end of time, requiring mortifying earthly members and putting off the old man with his deeds in order to appear with Christ in glory when Christ who is the life shall appear, so warnings are needed now and wrongs harbored by workers in the cause must be sternly resisted and cleansed from the soul. The hidden life is shown by freedom from sin's control and by fruits of the Spirit shaping conduct into mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, love, peace and thankfulness, leaving unbelievers with a favorable impression of the truth, whereas those who have not learned it put self first, love and serve self, measure worth by outward appearance and costly dress, hide Christ from view, lack the robe of righteousness, and when Jesus comes to take those who loved and served him to be with him forever are left unready in disappointment and anguish.

The truly penitent die to self and have life secured with Christ in God, understood by a repentance that needs not to be repented of and shown by earnest petitions in faith for fresh grace, new supplies of strength, and the efficiency and power of the Holy Spirit. Hiding the life is drawing to God in earnest faith so the soul is kept by God's power unto salvation, guarding against fresh assaults of Satan and enticing snares, against make-believe reformation showing only new self-exaltation and continual uplifting of self, and against cherishing a darling sin or indulgence that brings bondage, with self subdued and Christ magnified in fruit proving genuineness. This state must come before offering humble petition and before feeling sufficient for a great work, reached through fasting and earnest prayer with deep heart-searching and stern self-examination that lays bare the soul and lets no act or motive escape critical examination. If iniquity is regarded in the heart the Lord will not hear, and to have prayer answered while iniquity remains would only exalt self and give Satan advantage, while Christ's prayer for his disciples just before his crucifixion sustains such ones in every emergency.

The hidden life is entered only when sin is taken away through repentance and the robe of character is washed white in the blood of the Lamb, not by one who makes the soul a highway for worldly, impure, sensual and corrupting thoughts or wicked actions. It requires heart-purity and love, being emptied of self and surrendering will and way with self broken all to pieces and dying, venturing by faith upon God's loving promises, trusting the heavenly Father to keep what is committed, and looking to Calvary as proof that God wants sinners saved. It is reached by daily conversion, keeping eyes upon Jesus, making God the strength, yoking with Jesus, putting on Christ and being planted in him so as to be transformed and grow into his likeness with self hidden, to be known with certainty now where God reveals his presence, not waited for until later. When self is thus forgotten, divested, lost and submerged in Christ's immeasurable love through the inflowing of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ cannot be repressed but flows forth in holy conversation and in working for the depressed and suffering, which is Christlikeness and sanctification of body and spirit, enabling workers together with God to bring souls debased by sin into new life even the life of God and to sympathize with the neglected without sympathy for degradation, whereas without it iniquity overcomes and they fall into sin, make crooked paths and cannot lift others. This hiding also comes through earnest prayer and clinging faith in the new life of baptism.

In conversion those who once used the Bible to excuse a course God will never approve flee to Christ who is their life to be hidden with him in God. Hidden with him they join God's great work to redeem and save and repair the ruin sin has made and is making, seeing perpetual and lasting desolation, praying to be co-laborers with Christ, and beginning to repair the old waste places made by high and low in the law of God. Dying to self and hiding in Christ is the work that makes conversion possible and gives power to overcome passion that spoils physical and spiritual health, by full dedication without reservation coming under saving divine grace and fellowship of the Holy Spirit and placed under Christ's molding hand as pattern. The hidden life then brings appreciation of the beauty of Christ's character and familiarity with his meekness and gentleness, creating the necessity of cultivating gentleness, for to be hidden means self humbled and put away at Calvary so the believer lives no longer of self but Christ lives in him, with present life in the flesh lived by faith in the Son of God who loved him and gave himself for him by continually looking unto Jesus, when love of Christ is an abiding principle and the person is first made a saint renewed in knowledge and grace to a new man required of all whom God takes to heaven.

The hidden life belongs with renewal of the mind, conversion and the sanctifying change God works in the heart. Having life hidden is the first business of life and should not be delayed, and when Christ abides in the heart a person becomes circumspect and reliable, speaking purely and exerting a refreshing influence rather than contaminating others through idle talk and frivolous conduct. Ministers must humble proud hearts and submit wills to God living in dependence on Christ, and this joined life through Christ uniting finite man with infinite God must be made sure by diligence to make calling and election sure, made life's main study, with cleansing from impurity of sin in order to receive eternal life purchased at infinite cost and to be brought at last to Christ's throne.

Transformed Character and Holiness

The hidden life is sanctified and transformed by seeking what is above where Christ sits at God's right hand, bringing the Holy Spirit and the mind of Christ to those risen with him who are dead to earthly concerns. For everyone who makes Christ a personal Saviour the Spirit removes inherited and cultivated tendencies to evil, and by beholding Christ the believer becomes like him and is molded after the divine similitude through God's workshop of fitting, hewing, squaring and polishing, a process that hurts the natural temperament yet must not be met with rebellion. At conversion self dies and no selfishness belongs in the pattern, which means death to the old sinful self-indulgent character and reception of a new life of heavenly origin with changed life purposes whose principles are to be brought into daily experience in each person's place in the Lord's work. This hidden life is seen in sanctification through grace and works of righteousness, with Christ living in the heart as an abiding principle and power, faith working by love and purifying the soul and bringing everything into subjection to Jesus, until when Christ who is the life appears believers also appear with him in glory.

The one thus hidden has the mind that was in Christ with high, pure and elevated thoughts, growing into his likeness in character by beholding him by faith and being changed into his image. This comes by watching every action so nothing harms Christian experience, by reading Scripture attentively to get its full meaning and doing what is written, and by seeking self-mastery through constant prayer and faith with no limit to spiritual attainment, with heart, purpose and will bound up with Christ to do good and only good. The result brings the peace, joy and fragrance of Christ into daily thought and practical life so that he will never fall, with strength to remain sanctified in mind and heart and to think and speak rightly while growing in grace and Christian character. Turning wholly to him who is first and last and best, searching the Scriptures and fashioning conversation and character by the divine similitude, practicing truth and carrying out its lofty principles in daily life as laborers together with God, shows the fountain of the heart is pure, even as Christ's character revealing the holiness of the law is striven for amid conflict with traits Satan has strengthened, with Christ giving saving power to those pleading for grace.

Its heavenly character may not be seen by the world but its effects are visible in a life shaped by Christ, for those who partake of the divine nature walk as children of light and represent Christ in spirit and actions with words and deeds speaking louder than profession. Love for God and others becomes the natural source of conduct bearing the fruits of the Spirit and willingly doing Christ's works, while seeking divine light and delighting to do the Father's will without boasting of goodness or making religious attainments prominent or dwelling on them. Others may see the beauty of the Christian life while the person remains unconscious of it, in contrast to religious display and claims of sinlessness. The inner life comes when Christ and truth dwell within sanctifying and conforming to his image, living and walking in the Spirit and being filled with all fullness of God as living channels of light, shown in praying as Christ prayed, searching Scripture more earnestly as the day approaches, loving God supremely and neighbor as self, giving self without reserve and faithfully using possessions as God's goods to bear fruit in good works.

Believers take their mold from Christ instead of conforming reason, affections, speech, habits, customs and sentiments to any nation, with reason, affections, speech and habits changed according to his divine example so he sees himself in his followers. His Spirit is copied, his character reproduced in every true believer, and his tenderness, courtesy, love and solicitude for souls are made manifest through human effort to lift him up and draw all to him, causing deficiencies from false education and perverted ideas to disappear under his mold. Genuine faith brings Christ into the life so words, actions and thoughts come under his Spirit's influence, and the inward life is made evident outwardly as the Spirit shapes conduct with Christ as pattern testifying to divine power within. Converts joined with Christ by receiving truth show consecration, devotion and sanctification of body, soul and spirit, carrying the hidden essential life as Jesus in lonely, suffering, tempted humanity bore hidden life, producing unity with love binding heart to heart instead of manufactured trials causing disunion. Keeping eternity in view amid earthly concerns, this indwelling godliness shapes conversation and character, gives steadiness of purpose and sanctifies dealings with believers and others, producing moral strength and humility so one does not act sharply, dictatorially or arbitrarily but serves under God as Master.

By receiving Christ a person is made a partaker of his nature, lives in him, and is enriched with the highest, fullest blessedness in a purified, exalted life devoted to the grandest purposes, which is indeed eternal life. In that life God himself is enthroned in the heart making believers representatives of the Father and Son, a free unspeakable gift offered to all without confinement to time, place, nation or people. It is a life of virtue joined to Christ and directed toward eternal life in the heavenly kingdom, learned daily from Christ the Heavenly Teacher, making calling and election sure so none need lose eternal life and those continuing may look for abundant entrance into his everlasting kingdom. Living only one life on earth as virtue concealed in God through sharing the divine nature now means valuing what is above the sordid things of earth as seeking a better heavenly country, allowing nothing to separate from God through united daily effort to help one another gain perfection by ceasing criticism and turning from once-loved worldly things and advancing toward perfection, a present assurance of life measuring with God's life.

A life wholly given and bound to Christ brings practical results, making a person a power for good with a healthy, balanced and symmetrical Christian experience. Taking the yoke with full determination to obey every word hides life with Christ and is worked out in business by living the principles of the sermon on the mount, rejecting dishonest measures, the bag of deceitful weights, fraud and tricks in trade, earning money not to hoard but to put into useful circulation, keeping an abiding sense of belonging to the heavenly firm and family of God with duty to trade entrusted talents and act toward all as Christ acted. Daily honoring the Redeemer by living a new life after receiving the message means repenting, confessing and being converted, putting away all boasting, falsifying and evil speaking, humbling the heart, doing merciful acts and bringing mercy, justice and judgment into life and character as taught in Old and New Testaments. Being one with Christ so God is seen in followers brings life and immortality to light through them by heaven's spirit of light and knowledge, conducting even business by higher wisdom the world calls foolishness, while keeping Christ's perfect obedience constantly in view transforms character to resemble him, increases efficiency for those entrusted to one's charge, and lifts far above trials, perplexities and contamination of worldly schemes.

The Christian life hidden and bound up with Christ is marked by increasingly firm determination to do God's will, desire to understand and enjoy heavenly instruction, humility and growing knowledge. The Christian trains physical, mental and moral powers for honorable service, learns and follows God's commands and prohibitions, and welcomes the Spirit's warnings as guidance into enduring truth, bearing with age superior wisdom and piety. It is not built on self-exaltation or personal merit but calls for humble trust in Christ and looking to the way he lived as the example to follow.

Security Hope and Glory

The verse assures that life is secure with Christ in God, ransomed by his sacrifice, cleansed by his blood and clothed in his righteousness, precious to the Redeemer, giving rest in quiet faith while awaiting the overcomer's reward. Those who belong to Christ are dead to the world, buried with him in baptism and risen as a new creature to seek things above, with true life kept with him who brings life and immortality and is the resurrection and the life. This calls each servant to know where he stands spiritually and whether life is hid with Christ in God rather than remain ignorant, holding fast to Christ who gives power to become God's children amid efforts to lead away from faith. Apart from Jesus life would be miserable, so the desire is to know personally by dependence on grace and help that life is hidden, trusting him who conquered death to keep what is committed.

A life so secured gives strength to stand firm and unmoved with the Lord pledged as helper, requiring moral courage, independence from the world's customs, fashions, practices and maxims, and entire conformity to God's will with a clearly apparent line of demarcation. It rivets the soul to the eternal Rock so it is not swept away like waves beating to sweep followers from meekness and grace, placing the believer on vantage ground and calling the standard ever higher to meet the Bible as truth enters practical life. This brings good courage with no fear of the time of trouble approaching as a thief in the night, for when weakness is felt and trust is put in God he is strength, frontguard and rereward, giving strength amid suffering with the crown of life in view. Christ sustains with fullness of love amid darkness, supporting patient joyful endurance in affliction, weakness and death that testifies to faith and refines for heaven.

The true life hid with Christ is secure beyond power to destroy, so wicked people, persecutors and Satan may torture, imprison or kill the body with rack, stake and every invention of cruelty, yet they cannot kill the soul, touch the hidden life or bind the spirit. Even the sword bringing bodily death or piercing the soul with sorrow cannot separate from God's love, because that life is kept safe in Christ. Those who die for faith are conquerors, sustained through suffering as Christ was sustained in Gethsemane with strength, grace, comfort and more than mortal steadfastness, looking beyond present suffering to eternal glory and never left to perish.

For believing children death is only a brief sleep of silence and darkness, for the Saviour's life remains hidden in them which is eternal life. Though they die they rest until the Lifegiver calls them forth, and when Christ who is the life appears they will appear with him in glory clothed with immortality and eternal life. Made one with Christ in this present life they will remain one with him throughout eternity, raised at the last day with the trumpet to prepared mansions. The hidden life therefore carries hope beyond failing strength and affliction, secure in Christ even through death.

That hid life remains unseen in worldly striving but rests on experimental knowledge of the Father and Jesus Christ as abiding Saviour of more value than ten thousand worlds, upheld by divine power working against darkness as claimed in baptism in dying to the world. When Christ who is the life shall appear enshrouded in exceeding brightness with ten thousand times ten thousand angels and thousands of thousands coming in the clouds, the sanctified soul made one with Christ in God will meet him with joy and not grief, crying in thanksgiving and praise at long waiting fulfilled. Those who fought the good fight of faith on earth, living by faith in the Son of God and no longer to themselves but for him who died and rose by entire consecration, will then appear with him in glory. Fighting to make others better with Christ formed within as hope of glory and resting content in his love, they will shine forth with the Redeemer's glory in the kingdom where the New Jerusalem is rest, seeing him as he is and made like him, sharing the first resurrection over whom the second death has no power.

Paul's life shows this safety, redeemed, cleansed from sin and clothed in Christ's righteousness, trusting the One who conquered death to preserve what was entrusted, joined to resurrection at the last day with hope centered on the second advent. Like the cedar of Lebanon in strength, firmness and undecaying vigor the righteous flourish in every climate, by riverside and parched waste, rooting deep among rocks, standing against tempest and keeping leaves fresh and green when all else has perished in winter. Exalted by the divine hand as king over the forest and repeatedly used as emblem of royalty, the cedar shows how heaven regards those who do God's will. So Satan could cut short John the Baptist's earthly life but could not reach the life he had with Christ in God, and death placed him forever beyond temptation.

The righteous thus hidden are kept safe until desolation passes, sheltered when wrath falls on transgressors and the seven last plagues are poured out, standing through judgment and the coming crisis by sanctified obedience to God's laws. Sanctified through truth in love of God, hiding in Jesus the Way, Truth and Life rather than concealing sin behind a lie, they remain hidden until desolation is overpast when inhabitants are punished for iniquity. Amid multiplying disasters while angels hold back the four winds, life is safe only when hidden with Christ, which matters more than safety from drought, famine, pestilence, earthquakes or other upheavals. Reports of calamity by sea and land warn all without delay to seek the Lord earnestly, make sure of this hiding, and keep a good hope in Christ so sudden disaster does not catch them unprepared, for there is safety nowhere else.

This hidden life is safety in approaching trouble, storm, destructive work, calamities and war when the seal of God is placed in the forehead, so whatever happens or wherever a person is he is safe and protected with nothing to fear, seeing God's grace and salvation. It requires making calling and election sure now, living out received light of truth, being prepared to close earthly history as God finishes his work, and being educated by the Holy Spirit, because the end comes soon. Those living at the end must be sure life is hid when facing hatred, betrayal, persecution and flight, taking lack of wisdom to the Lord in prayer and acknowledging him to have paths directed. Having life hidden is the first business of life not to be delayed, belonging with renewal of mind and union to Christ whose abiding presence brings purity, circumspect reliable conduct and refreshing influence instead of contaminating idle talk.

So hidden, a person has good hope and readiness for death or sudden disaster and will not be caught unready, with full contentment whether living or dying in perfect security without misgiving and freedom from anxiety with eternity in view. Even in old age with death near there is rest and peace in belonging to the Lord, removing trouble over temporal matters and making the great desire to know it is well with the soul. When Christ who is the life shall appear the believer shall appear with him in glory, meeting loved ones around God's throne, seeing the King in beauty, and having life measuring with God's life. This requires self dying so Jesus lives within, living for God alone to his glory as seeing him who is invisible, finding rest, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost through lifelong persevering untiring effort because heaven is worth everything.

God wants his people to rise and get victory over darkness and be free indeed, drinking from the full free fountain and drawing sap and nourishment from the living vine without letting the enemy stop them. No one should rest without knowing life is hidden, which requires daily full assurance of acceptance, and where that assurance is present all is well, giving holy boldness to come to the throne of grace and draw strength and glory from the sanctuary in triumph in God. Calvary proves God wants believers saved with everlasting salvation, and a life hid is to be known now on the very ground where they stand, not waited for until going home without assurance. Believers' lives thus hidden give refuge and access to salvation amid last-day deceptions and deceptive miracles for satanic theories, requiring firm standing with faith on God's sure promises rather than human words, trusting wholly in God and drawing near to him as time is short.

In preparation to herald the gospel and the third angel's message to every soul, this hidden position is safety from rebellion and confusion, appealing to Christ as Advocate, receiving peace with God, rejoicing in hope of salvation and carrying pardon to others, with life bound to Christ through living working faith under the Spirit's direction. Those who humble themselves keeping eyes fixed on God are safely hidden amid troubles and foretold signs, belonging to God with worth from a Spirit-shaped life. Because Christ is their life they will appear with him in glory, finding spiritual security and identity in Christ rather than contending over small differences as unprecedented trouble approaches, with prosperity hidden depending on humility, meekness, wholehearted obedience and no confidence in human strength.

A life wholly given and hidden is preserved as precious, not left alone or overcome in hard circumstances but sustained through them, kept precious and secure by God who will not abandon the faithful worker to opposition. Those living godly are safe in troublous times, centering faith deeply in Jesus so no circumstance can shake it, finding safety and life in him and kept safe by an all-powerful God when moving according to his directions even to death's gates. While that life remains hidden it does not lose spiritual vitality, and lives are secure only as hidden because Jesus lives to intercede with all hopes of eternal life centered in him alone. Amid blackness closing about the world and growing evil and danger, his power is greater than threats, and hiding with him is the Christian's hope and only safety.

This hidden life is the only life-insurance heaven sanctions, with security resting in Christ who is the life, so that when he appears those dead to former life appear with him in glory. Human life is sacred as manifestation of God the source of all life, secure only when hidden, otherwise gone forever. Trusting in Christ and depending on him as Mediator, led by the Spirit and relying on the merits and efficacy of his atoning sacrifice, is security and hope, making partakers of divine nature while working out salvation as God works within. Faith lays hold of the crucified and risen Saviour's righteousness to stand acquitted, with living faith joined with works yet no boasting since righteousness is in Christ, for salvation and victory depend on him not on independent doing, accompanied by daily fellowship and growth in knowing him even amid infirmity.

The life and soul hidden is safe, kept by Jesus as personal Saviour, Substitute, Surety and righteousness able to save to the uttermost and stronger than the strong man armed, holding through storms, severe tests and every effort to distress, annoy and delude. It is entered and kept by continual increase of faith, walking by faith not feeling or sight, looking to Jesus, living close to God with daily hourly communion and prayer, resting soul, body and spirit in him with his peace instead of looking to imperfect life, wisdom and self-confidence, giving sufficiency and divine power to bless, uplift and ennoble and to do all things through his strength. Safety is found in oneness with Christ in God in striving for eternal life through the narrow gate, where the way to Paradise and the crown of immortality is not wealth, position, dignity or intellect but Christlike character of meekness, humility and dependence on God.

Unity Service and Witness

Being hidden with Christ in God unites believers as one redeemed family, encircled by the human arm of Jesus which alone gives any right to heaven, so dissension and opposition against any child of God is forbidden and mutual love is both possible and required under melting mercy. This oneness is pure and undefiled religion, receiving suffering humanity of all classes alike without pride, partiality or exclusiveness, in contrast to the spirit of the world which favors only a few. The hidden life is made perfect in unity as Christ's character is received and baptismal vows are kept, with Father, Son and Holy Spirit working together to bring complete unity that displays heaven's character and the principles of truth to the world. That union remains imperfect while discord and strife remain, for God desires heart-to-heart unity by His Spirit, shown in gracious and generous treatment that reveals His love and tenderness, and through faith Jews and Gentiles once at variance are made one in Christian fellowship and communion by the love and wisdom of God.

When Christ draws believers to Himself they are hidden with Him in God, and this hidden union shows the world that God loves them as He loves His Son. God imparts His Spirit to them, truth takes possession of them with divine power and influence, and they become one harmonious whole with Christ as its soul, where every element works in right lines and every worker filling his appointed place helps uplift the cross of Calvary. This life in Christ is expressed through unity in faith, obedience to God's commandments and love for one another, living by the golden rule and testifying that the Father loves them and that Christ's gift has not been in vain. Those whose life is hid are a peculiar people, chosen by God and precious, united in harmonious action, and what is required is not a great number of institutions, large buildings and outward display but this united working. To have life hid means every person stands in his own lot and place exerting a right influence in thought, word and deed, and only when all workers do this will the work be a complete symmetrical whole.

Humble believers serving in ordinary circumstances may be the hidden ones, with little worldly wisdom or knowledge of theology and a humble view of their own merit, yet loving Jesus as they know Him, trusting Him as personal Saviour, using what they have to bless others, and Christ will acknowledge their service. Such a faithful worker belongs to God and values the better life above food and clothing, joined to unselfish service and care for those for whom Christ died with willingness to bear the burden for their salvation in hope of reward and eternal happiness in His kingdom. The verse calls for turning mind, affections, heart and intellect away from the world toward the things of God so they can be grasped, as part of the high calling in Christ Jesus. Those risen with Christ have died to earthly things with life kept secure in God, shown by transformation into the divine likeness that produces true intellectual culture and refinement of feeling and manners, as the Holy Spirit removes inherited and cultivated tendencies to evil and beholding Christ makes them like Him in seeking things above where Christ sits at God's right hand until He who is their life appears. Those baptized into His death and raised in likeness of His resurrection are dead with life hid under the sanctification of the Holy Spirit, and schools in different localities are to teach with intellectual and divine enlightenment this thorough knowledge of what constitutes Christian character and fitness for mission work, requiring affections set on things above and not on things on the earth.

The hidden life is kept safe through continual reliance on God's power, requiring watchfulness and prayer to guard purity and maintain religious principles because temptation can gradually weaken the soul. The former self is dead and true life draws spiritual nourishment from Christ so sin is expelled from the soul, joined to the promise that when Christ appears believers will appear with Him in glory. Personal direct communion with God and watchfulness in prayer belong to this life amid the perils of the last days, overcoming through the Lamb's blood and testimony with God present to give strength for daily duties. It is a daily experience in which Christ lives within guiding will and actions and bringing salvation from all sin, with the heart set in order and purified by truth in preparation for the latter rain. Such a life is known through watchful prayer, belonging with overcoming, devotion and active service.

Young men and women preparing for ministry are instructed to give attention to self first, give themselves to the Lord for sanctification to His service, have Christ formed within as hope and strength of life, seek from Christ grace and clearness of comprehension for successful work and good fruit, and maintain a godly example and well-ordered life that tells more than eloquence alone. They are to learn from Christ what it means to labor for those for whom He gave His life, and go forth in humility and meekness to places where truth has not been proclaimed rather than preaching to the churches. All who minister must be converted, humble proud hearts, submit wills to God and have life hidden by God's power alone changing the heart, filling it with Christ's love, correcting and subduing passions and sanctifying affections. Unless ministers are so converted churches will be sickly and ready to die.

A worker's life must be hidden by daily conversion, keeping eyes upon Jesus, making God the strength, yoking with Christ, putting on Christ and being planted in Him so as to be transformed and grow into His likeness with self hidden. Only with this hidden life can workers together with God bring poor ignorant souls debased by sin into new life, even the life of God, while without it iniquity overcomes professed Christians and missionaries, they fall into sin and make crooked paths and cannot lift others. Dependence on God and closeness to Jesus enable sympathy for the neglected and oppressed without sympathy for degradation even while surrounded by sin. Safety and life are found in Jesus with power with God, teaching reliance on Christ rather than own judgment or wisdom from those who reject Him, keeping from false paths and mistakes in following God's guidance. Laborers together with God are to be humble with lives hid so their character represents Christ and He appears glorified in words and actions, with no sin and no hasty untempered speech because such speech misrepresents Him.

Applied to proclaiming truth, the hidden life means self is lost from view so Christ and truth rather than the preacher are made prominent. Those in missionary work are to hide in Jesus letting Christ rather than self appear and relying on pledged promises when discouraged, for the true Christian united to Christ has self hidden from view and Christ revealed with light testifying to that union. The human worker is hidden so Christ appears as supreme and wholly lovely, and servants of God are not to be glorified or made idols because Christ is supreme and true authority. Hiding self day by day so self does not appear but Christ is revealed gives all honor and glory to God because nothing can be done without Him, and those who by living faith reveal Him will appear with Him when He who is their life appears. Those thus hidden fight the good fight of faith on earth, live to make others better, show Christ formed within as hope of glory, rest content in His love, and when Christ appears will shine with the Redeemer's glory in the kingdom made like Him in seeing Him as He is.

Work is not to be managed through self-reliance but done in dependence on God, and as self is hidden the work is wrought in God. Self must be hid rather than managing God's cause in human way by human disposition and strength which can expect little, for when self is hid all plans and methods are wrought in God who has imparted moral powers and religious susceptibilities. Being hid means drawing nigh to God, laboring together with Him and having faith at every step while realizing weakness without faithlessness, while without it weakness and mistakes appear in all that is undertaken. Being hid is necessary for God to do the work He is ready to do for and through a person, requiring coming close in earnest prayer, emptying the soul of selfishness and clinging to Jesus with living faith, for otherwise self takes the glory God should have. Only when people depend on Christ rather than trust their own abilities can the Lord work with them, so self must be surrendered that God rather than the believer receives glory, and when self is laid low and Christ receives glory God can work through believers giving His Spirit and salvation.

When self is forgotten, divested and no longer exalted with life hidden through the inflowing of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ cannot be repressed but flows forth in holy conversation and working for the depressed and suffering, which is Christlikeness and sanctification of body and spirit. This hiding comes only when sin is taken away through repentance and the robe of character washed white, not to one who makes the soul a highway for worldly impure sensual corrupting thoughts or wicked actions. A life hidden is shaped by holiness and expressed in service, and a physician whose life is hidden becomes a missionary through right spirit and holy example, working without selfishness or hypocrisy and ready for every good work with holy life as constant instruction free from partiality and hollow worldly courtesy. Such a life sows seeds that bear fruit to eternal life, first allows Jesus to mold character then molds others, becomes a vessel unto honor transmitting impressions for good through ceaseless ages with blessing repeating as reflected onward, walks humbly with God, advances only in the highest heavenly direction in truth and righteousness, stands as a beacon of light dropping golden words as dew, helps other feet tread the royal path and brings many sheaves to the Master, so the good done is not buried at death.

Selfishness dead with life hid must be evidenced in councils and conference meetings by carrying out God's principles with tact and wisdom, with selfish habits of thought corrected and selfish motives eradicated from devising and planning under wisdom from God, bringing success in wise undertakings. Inward surrender makes it possible to be like Jesus and act with order and harmony, not neglecting abilities but cultivating every faculty and earnestly using talents so they increase. The people of God have life hidden, belonging to a people united, shaped by God and fruitful in service, where no person is to rule as controlling power over another. Every person has an individuality not to be submerged in another, owned by God, standing or falling to the Maker, responsible to God and not to fellow men, under God's control and not weak erring human beings, left free to be guided by the Holy Spirit rather than dictated to and bound by rules from unsanctified men. Personal identity hid with Christ still preserves individuality, with talents entrusted for which each is responsible to Him only, Christ the only sure dependence, each to maintain individuality, feel personal responsibility and do appointed work knowing no other can fight his battles, gaining strength by looking to Jesus while yielding individuality to others to think and act instead brings weakness.

A life hidden brings divine help and makes a person one with the Saviour and those taught, calling for exalting Christ rather than self and revealed through sympathy, tenderness, kindness and encouragement. The life bound up with Christ sets self aside in dependence, enabling colaborers to serve with greatness of soul and reflect His character in word and deed in seeking to save others. Oneness with Christ makes a church fruitful, for a truly converted person does not live helpless and useless but takes part in serving others. Having life hidden keeps souls from being overcome when Satan comes with specious temptations as an angel of light and keeps feet from strange paths, because eyes are anointed to discern his wiles and a new supernatural divine life is linked with theirs. Those one with Christ do not boast of wisdom but feel weakness, hunger and thirst after righteousness and trust One mighty to save all who come to Him. When self is hidden in Jesus a person is shielded from the enemy's attacks, and walking humbly with God and living consistently supports usefulness and makes counsel persuasive.

Fallen people reach purity by hiding with Christ, and amid trials and temptations faith sustains them as character is purified like gold refined in a furnace until dross is removed. Henceforth believers are Christ's servants who no longer live to themselves but for Him who died and rose, their lives hid by entire consecration looking to the Saviour for peace and joy and uniting influence without exalting self or disparaging others to make the earth radiant and advance God's work, so when Christ who is their life appears they appear with Him in glory. Accepting Christ enters close relationship with God with special favor and intimate association, marking those who belong to Christ as not bound with evil workers or drawn into worldly strife. Loving Jesus means having life hidden, enabling withstanding severe daily trials, and even amid deception and conflict over Christ's identity God's people dead to former life stand boldly as His soldiers secure in this hidden life.

The lives of Enoch, Joseph and Daniel were hidden, remaining loyal and pure amid unbelief, depravity and idolatry because faith drew on God's strength. A hidden life is marked by character made meek, lowly and holy before Christ comes, which outward circumstances cannot prevent when closely connected with God receiving the Holy Spirit, and the changed character reflected in daily conduct becomes a witness. The apostles' lives were hidden with self no longer the focus, submerged in depths of infinite love. Those who accept Christ are dead to former life with life hidden in Him, taking on the vows of students in His school. The life renewed by grace and hidden is eloquent in simplicity, and true eloquence belongs only to those who have tasted Christ's love, not to men learned in this world's wisdom.

Converted men fit for sacred work show a hidden life pure, refined and elevated with commendation of all, with foolishness and self-serving cut out, keeping stern integrity in small as well as larger responsibilities and showing sanctified accuracy in business dealing in the Lord's institutions by the Holy Spirit. That transformed life is devoted to spiritual growth and uses talents and property to honor God, advance His cause and bless others. Souls whose life is hid must now come to the front and contend for the faith once delivered, defending truth and advancing God's kingdom as if Christ were in person, learning meekness and lowliness from Christ as the great Medical Missionary rather than exalting self. Until every desire to uplift self is put away the hidden life cannot clearly discern Christ's character nor do the work He did. Resistance to evil and enmity against Satan come from this life in Christ not natural temperament, and courage and strength for Christian warfare are supernatural from Jesus. The life hidden with hope of eternal life centered in Christ is expressed through His power, where truth sanctifies, refines and purifies and all good works are done through His enabling.

Those called to sacred work are to live with lives hidden, and every soul connected with God's institutions must be tested on this point with great care in selecting workers, because without self hidden workers act blindly and hinder the precious work. If self is not hid when every soul is tested, human beings will hinder God's work, for to have self hid means to be converted and become as a little child, overcome selfishness and hatred, be sound in faith and manifest day by day in words and spirit Christ's righteousness and heavenly graces with essential self-control, while an unsanctified character where self is not hid is the greatest evil met in the work. Hiding self means putting self aside and walking humbly and carefully before God, applied to working in the South with humility and caution where careless words or actions could provoke hostility and endanger others. Self is hid by representing Christ in character as living epistles, in dependence bringing angels' cooperation and proving nothing can be done without Christ, pressing closer to Jesus amid sin, grieving at sin while wearing His yoke in preparation to be a temple for the Holy Spirit, with sympathy for the neglected, oppressed and despised but none for degradation.

The willing soul bound to the Redeemer has life hidden as truth abiding in the heart sanctifies, animates, encourages, impels and constrains, so God's love becomes an abiding power in following Christ's footsteps, looking to Christ and growing in knowing the Lord, with faith increased by exercise exerting decided influence on self and others. Through Him believers have a title to an imperishable inheritance with all-sufficient grace. Thorough consecration in whatever position providence permits makes believers instruments for developing Christian virtues and cooperating with God, requiring every class to labor together rather than sit hearing the Word without communicating it, for the Lord gives everyone a work and excuses no one who folds hands and makes himself a center. It requires proclaiming truth so it goes forth as a burning lamp with no thread of selfishness woven in, seeing light in God's light. Being hid comes when humbly and prayerfully seeking to enlighten others, for the hidden life is not inactivity but labor to save souls in dependence on God while angels make blessed impressions on hearts being sought.

Paul after genuine repentance and faith and washing illustrates the verse, for dead to self he no longer ascribed goodness and merit to himself, ceased to think more highly of himself than he ought, was no longer sensitive to reproach, neglect or contempt, no longer sought earthly alliance, station or honor, and did not pull others down to uplift himself. Hid with Christ he became gentle, condescending, meek and lowly, talked of Jesus and His matchless love, grew into His image, loved Jesus with all ardor, bent whole energy to win souls, bowed in prayer when trial came from unselfish love and loved them more, and held every church and member dear looking upon every soul as purchased by Christ's blood. Being dead with Christ living inside as Paul proved by loving truth, winning souls and schooling his tongue to glorify God means actions speaking for Christ, a living epistle known and read, and a noble life preaching by higher standard in words, spirit and action carrying Christ and representing the meek and lowly Jesus wherever one goes. In sanitarium work self must be hid by uplifting a high standard raising the banner of truth, with truth, goodness and usefulness upbuilding the institution, workers seeking to excel in all high and good, educating themselves to be kind and courteous, letting heaven's credentials appear and cheerfulness circulate to make things pleasant for all.

A physician whose life is hid is ready for every good work and a missionary in the highest sense, conducting himself with fellow Christian physicians as a son of God knowing all work in the same vineyard as brethren so every selfish barrier is broken down. He feels deep interest for others untainted with selfishness, does not contend over who is greatest, and knowing himself a branch of the same vine is wholly dependent on Jesus for growth and success with nothing of his own to boast of. The physician is to hide self in the Saviour, refuse praise for bringing relief and point to Christ as deserving all praise. The canvasser is to hide himself in Christ and depend on Him for strength, so Christ works with him as he serves others.

Humble Daily Obedience

Living the hidden life requires denying self, taking up the cross and following in footsteps of self-denial and sacrifice, refusing to serve mammon and Baal and refusing worldly methods, customs, fashions, pride, pomp, ambition and self-pleasing, with body, mind, soul and every entrusted gift surrendered to God's service, will and law with no divided heart, pledged in baptism to remain dead to sin and the world and to seek things above.
Victory comes not by human strength but through help from the Father, Son and Holy Spirit who lift a standard when the enemy comes like a flood and pledge strength and victory, requiring discerning weak points of character and guarding against them, remaining dependent through watchfulness, prayer, faith and works, guarding affections and passions and seeking God's direction at every step against the undercurrent pulling back to sin.
Self hid means humility with no self-exaltation, pride, self-sufficiency, selfishness or insistence on own ideas and plans, but a meek lowly character with affections in harmony with the Saviour, seeing self as one really is, being broken on the Rock, denying self and letting Christ reign, which is strength and qualifies workers for souls with unselfish love, the Lord working for those who so humble themselves.
Self must be emptied and kept hidden so Christ alone appears, his preciousness and importance of truth seen, character molded to the divine likeness and the Spirit controlling with Christ formed within as hope of glory, whereas when self appears souls are misled and sacredness of truth is lost; self is concealed so nothing is revealed in service but Jesus, with faults corrected through repentance, confession, forsaking what grieves the Spirit and reformation.
Self is hidden in Jesus when truth is enthroned in the heart with Christ's Spirit guiding and controlling passions and affections and keeping from harmful poisonous influence, when workers recognize weakness and depend on God for wisdom and grace, when closely united to the Living Vine partaking of the divine nature through communion, and when surrendering personal plans to follow God's way.
Self is to be hidden so Christ shapes and guides life, putting aside selfishness and self-serving to act faithfully and unselfishly, esteeming self less with more earnest effort for others, and revealing Christ as altogether lovely with growing love for teaching truth and progress and far-reaching work for God's glory alone.
Self is hidden when members practice truth with less self-assurance and more dependence, guarding influence over the young in faith, sharing mercy as messengers of mercy and partners with Jesus, giving up strife for supremacy and selfish ambition, staying joined to Christ and wearing his armor in loyalty by precept and example.
When self is dead and life hidden, neglect, reproach, scorn, insult, slights and unkind words are no longer taken to heart to destroy peace, love of self no longer guards itself from mortification, and the person lives longsuffering kind humble unselfish love with Christ's peace independent of circumstances, goods or friends because Christ is the unfailing fountain, restraining impulse and leaving painful things with Christ who bears burdens.
Keeping hid means staying preciously near to him who is strength and efficiency, living on the sunny side of the cross where the Sun of Righteousness shines, walking with Jesus, giving self to its Owner daily and hourly, yielding the mind bought with blood to his control, bridling the tongue so the whole body is under control, and simply cooperating without unnatural effort, making religious life beautiful with God's love as front guard and rearward.
Those so hidden love God with all heart, mind, strength and powers and neighbor as self, stand fast under pressure of temptation resisting the tide of iniquity through watchfulness and earnest prayer, with God's light before them even in humblest works and his glory behind, cheerfully bearing his yoke and staying united instead of looking at darkness.
Hiding life means living in dependence finding in him the pattern of holiness, longing and striving to become like him as his character reveals the law's holiness, bringing conflict as the tempter resists losing influence and traits strengthened by Satan must be contended with while Christ gives saving power and strength to those pleading for grace and help to gain victory.

The life and character hidden means Christ dwells in the heart by living faith changing life to reflect his meekness and lowliness, so impulse and passion must not govern words or actions, believers respond as Jesus would without revenge, and self is humbled so Jesus and his grace are exalted in greater humility and continual work in God.
Self hid is the condition for studying Scripture, laying aside personal ideas, opinions and prejudice at the door instead of making them the center around which truth revolves, coming with humble subdued hearts emptied of prejudice and earnest prayer seeking God's revealed will and ways on which eternal welfare depends rather than searching to prove theories.
Self is to be subdued and hid so Christ alone appears when wrong must be reproved and ungodliness opposed, maintaining reformatory principles of practical godliness at whatever sacrifice of ease or reputation while representing Christ's meekness and self-control and helping extend the triumphs of the cross, with the manner of fighting evil determining the result.
Self must not be brought forward as a specialty in soul-winning but kept hidden, bringing Christ's simplicity and melting love that speaks to hearts when mere repetition does nothing and giving credentials of one who loves souls in shaping and molding mission work.
A hidden life does not seek exaltation or take credit to self but exalts Jesus alone for honor, majesty and praise, so one so hidden will not face jealousy when a fellow minister receives a gift, complain because brethren stand in their lot and place, or find it strange to be unrecognized and unappreciated, but each draws life, spirit and knowledge from God and accepts his own gift and ability.
Hiding means following where he leads instead of rushing before him, weeding out extravagant expressions, cultivating caution in every statement and moving discreetly and sensibly so unbalanced inexperienced minds are not started on a wrong track into wild immature movements and confusion diverting strength from God's work, for one fanatical streak closes doors and gives enemies a statement to seize, while careful movement is strength with God working with and by and for the worker.
