Colossians 3:8

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

But now calls those who are risen with Christ and dead with their life hid with Christ in God to lay aside anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy with lying, and corrupt speech from the mouth as fruits of the unregenerate heart. The now is after pledging to serve Christ in truth through baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, which commits the baptized to remain dead to the world and no longer walk in uncleanness and idolatry that bring God's wrath. To put off is to lay aside the old man with his deeds, with self dying to the old sinful character and a new life of heavenly origin brought into daily experience without any thread of selfishness. This putting off belongs with putting on the new man renewed after the image of his Creator, where all earthly distinctions disappear and Christ is all and in all, shown in mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, forbearance, forgiveness, and charity as the bond of perfectness. It is not a past profession or first conversion only but a present experience kept by constant grace, watchfulness unto prayer, and abiding union with Christ, and it belongs to preparation for heaven during this life of probation so as to appear with Christ in glory.

Command in Context

The command is given to those risen with Christ, who are dead and whose life is hid with Christ in God. It calls them to seek the things above where Christ sits at the right hand of God and to set affection on things above and not on things of the earth. When Christ who is their life appears, they will appear with Him in glory if they follow the principles of heaven during this life of probation instead of the members upon the earth and continue in the putting off. The putting off belongs with putting off the old man with his deeds and leaving behind the disobedient life once lived, and with putting on the new man renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him, where Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond and free disappear and Christ is all and in all. That new life is shown in mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forbearing and forgiving one another in any quarrel even as Christ forgave, and above all charity as the bond of perfectness, and the command to enter it is direct and plain.

The now is after pledging to serve Christ in truth through baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Baptism represents Christ's resurrection and commits the baptized to God's service and to represent the life of Christ, with the old sinful life dead. The baptized are therefore to remain dead to the world and no longer follow its methods and former walk in fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness which is idolatry that brings the wrath of God on the children of disobedience, but to come out from the world and be separate as sons and daughters of God, complete in Christ. By abiding in Christ rather than centering words and actions on self they show what Christ can do, for they are dead to sin and their life is hidden with Christ in God. Keeping this charge proves the covenant to act as a member of the royal family, a child of the heavenly King.

To put off is to lay aside the old man with his deeds and the disobedient life once lived. At conversion self dies to the old sinful, self-indulgent character, life purposes are changed, and a new life of heavenly origin received with the truth is to be brought into daily experience and into each person's place in the Lord's work, leaving no thread of selfishness in the pattern of life. These are fruits of the unregenerate heart and must not appear in those dead to sin, and when they faithfully live out their vow to God the fruits of righteousness appear. This moral change belongs to preparation for heaven, with the life purified and brought into harmony with Christ's example and lived in kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, love, and peace as the new self renewed in the Creator's image.

The evils to be put off are anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy with lying, and filthy communication out of the mouth. They are understood as sinful temper, evil speaking, corrupt talk, selfishness, envy, hatred, unbelief, quick impatient temper, hate, revenge, retaliation, pride, emulation and seeking supremacy. They are carnal desires and fierce burning passions that destroy love, gentleness, kindness and Christian courtesy, so the verse means a complete transformation of the entire being that empties the heart and life of them. Those born into God's royal family must therefore strip away selfishness and self-indulgence and cleanse every offensive thing from their words, clearing away corrupt speech as part of making a way for God to dwell among His people. Unsanctified words have no place in the church.

The call requires turning heart, mind, affections, and intellect away from the world and toward the things of God as part of the high calling in Christ. It requires the transforming power of the grace of Christ affecting heart and character. The whole heart is to be given to God so He can shape it in the divine likeness under the Holy Spirit's guidance and the Word.

New Life Applied

Putting off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy with lying, and filthy communication out of the mouth belongs with putting off the old man with his deeds and putting on the new man renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him. In that new man Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond and free disappear and Christ is all and in all. The putting on is shown as the elect of God holy and beloved put on mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance and forgiveness toward one another in any quarrel even as Christ forgave, and above all charity as the bond of perfectness, with God's peace ruling, thankfulness, truthfulness, and the word dwelling richly in mutual teaching and singing. Leaving the former way of life behind means living in kindness, humility, patience, love and peace, cultivating true home and church religion.

Keeping this charge proves the covenant to act as a member of the royal family, a child of the heavenly King. It keeps from lying against professed truth by revealing a sinner in works while professing to be a saint. It keeps from nullifying the prayer Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven by acting as sinners act for convenience and self-advantage at a neighbor's disadvantage. Words and actions must agree with profession, showing death to sin and life with Christ rather than the former walk.

The putting off is not a past profession or first conversion but a present experience kept by constant divine grace, watchfulness unto prayer, abiding union with Christ every moment, and working with both faith and works against the strong current pulling back to sin. It means a complete transformation of the entire being, emptying heart and life of quick impatient temper, hate, envy, revenge, retaliation, pride, emulation and seeking supremacy. It means discerning weak points of character and guarding against them with rigor and severity, with stern, determined resistance, cleansing them from the soul. It is keeping the baptismal pledge to live in newness of life and no longer walk in former disobedience.

God has covenanted with His saints that the power and grace of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit will await their call and come to their aid when tempted to deny Christ. When the enemy comes in like a flood the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him, enabling them to stand as victors and not fall into Satan's trap. Baptism represents Christ's resurrection and commits the baptized to God's service, and the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit give power and grace to resist temptation to dishonor God. When they faithfully live out their vow to God, the fruits of righteousness appear.

The command is direct and plain instruction for the church of God to the end of time. It is practical truth every believer in the church must heed, and especially workers in the cause, because some engaged in the work still give place to these evils. Unsanctified words have no place in the church. Words and actions must agree with profession by abiding in Christ rather than centering on self, treating one another with respect, examining one's own words and motives instead of criticizing others, and speaking of God's love and power in praise. By abiding in Christ rather than centering words and actions on themselves, believers show what Christ can do.

The change is to bless family, neighbors, and acquaintances after Christ's example of doing good, with beneficence as the sure fruit of life. By clearing away corrupt speech a way is made for God to dwell among His people. Leaving these things behind gives unbelievers a favorable impression of the truth and shows the sinful world what Christ can do.

This moral change belongs to preparation for heaven and immortal life during this life of probation. It means following the principles of heaven instead of the members upon the earth, purifying the life and bringing it into harmony with Christ's example. It is among the scriptural precepts for living happily, teaching believers to cherish the joys of heaven. Those who continue will appear with Christ in glory when Christ who is their life appears.
