Paul Writing a Letter by Window Lightby CBPepper

Colossians 4:18

The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.

The closing greeting was added by Paul personally in his own handwriting, signing the letter himself. The body of the letter was set down by a scribe, and his regular use of such help is explained by defective eyesight. That handwritten ending identified the letter as truly his at a time when false letters were being passed around under his name.

He wrote it as a prisoner in Rome, chained to a soldier or otherwise held in bonds. In it he asks the believers to remember his imprisonment. He closes by wishing Christ's grace to be with the readers.

Though little regarded in Rome at the time, these closing words reached believers in Colosse and elsewhere and continued to influence people as the Scriptures spread.
