In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks.
Though advanced in age and pressed with the responsibilities of life in a heathen court, Daniel put worldly affairs aside to seek God and to understand His purposes. For three full weeks he mourned while earnestly appealing for further light, wisdom, and understanding concerning subjects not yet fully explained and a revealed vision whose meaning he still sought. That mourning was an afflicting of his soul and a humbling of himself before God through fasting, eating no pleasant food and taking no meat or wine, not anointing himself, and praying most earnestly in tears with confession and humiliation.
His seeking was not in vain, for his words were heard from the first day he set his heart to understand and humbled himself before God. His earnest prayer moved heaven to his relief, so that a mighty angel came from heaven to him, ministering angels brought him in vision the communication from God, and Christ appeared with a heavenly messenger to teach him. The teaching thus given was light received directly from God, given especially for the last days, concerning events in the latter days for the people living then. Daniel 10 belongs among his prophecies of future ages, which he himself did not fully understand and which are to be understood in connection with the time of the end.
The vision introduced by that mourning was seen by the banks of the Hiddekel, one of the great rivers of Shinar. It is now in process of fulfillment, with all its foretold events soon to come to pass.
