Daniel 12:13

But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

Daniel was told to go his way faithfully to the end even though he would not understand all that had been shown him. To rest means to rest in death in the grave for a time, and to stand in his lot at the end of the days means to rise and receive his appointed place and bear his testimony in the closing period of this world's history. The time has come for Daniel to stand in his lot, and the light given to him in vision is to go to the world as never before with increased knowledge of Christ and the prophecies about Him as earth's history nears its close. His standing takes place since the seal was removed, for the testimony closed up and sealed till the time of the end is now unsealed, so Daniel and Revelation interpret one another and together are to be carried forward to the last scenes. In the same way each person will stand in his appointed lot at God's judgment, and is now to stand faithfully in the place and work God assigns until the end.

Daniel's Closing Charge

The charge comes as God's answer to Daniel's question about the end of the last-day things, telling him to go his way faithfully till the end. Although he would not understand all the revelations given to him, he was to continue on his way until his life ended. The prophecy would remain sealed until the time of the end.

To rest means to rest in death in the grave for a time until the end. God's servants may rest there for a time, but their work does not end with this life. When the call comes they will rise and take up their work again in God's kingdom. To stand in one's lot and place means to take the position God has prepared, and bringing Christ's love into the heart and home prepares a person for it. The promise is that those who remain faithful in the place and work God has given until the end, trusting in Jesus and doing humbly the work He has given without taking over another's task or criticizing others, will rest and then receive their appointed place.

To stand in his lot at the end of the days is a future event in the closing period of this world's history, when Daniel would rise and receive his appointed place. He would rest until the end and then stand in his allotted place. His standing takes place since the seal was removed and the light of truth has been shining upon his visions, by bearing the testimony that was to be understood at the end of the days. The time for him to stand in that lot has come, and the light given to him in vision is to go to the world as never before. Those who walk in the light and search the Scriptures with hungering hearts will gain greatly increased knowledge of Christ and of the prophecies relating to Him as earth's history nears its close. His prophecies would then be unsealed and take their proper place in the first, second, and third angels' messages.

Daniel stands as an example of standing faithfully in the work and place God assigns him. He stands in his appointed place as one accepting God's special work, ready to answer His call and fulfill His purpose. Now standing in that lot, his instruction is to be heard by the people.

Unsealing and Final Messages

The time has now come for Daniel to stand in his lot, and the light given to him in vision is to go to the world as never before. Those who search the Scriptures with hungering and thirsting hearts to know God and Jesus Christ will be rewarded with understanding, and as they walk in the light their knowledge of Christ and of the prophecies relating to Him will be greatly increased as earth's history nears its close. His instruction is to be heard by the people, for he was promised he would rest until the end and then stand in his allotted place at the end of the days.

His standing takes place since the seal was removed and the light of truth has been shining upon his visions, bearing the testimony that was to be understood at the end of the days. That testimony was closed up and sealed till the time of the end after he twice asked how long to the end, and at the time of the end it is unsealed by the Lion of the tribe of Judah, who gave to John on Patmos the revelation of the last days to complement what was revealed to Daniel. Daniel and Revelation interpret one another and together are to be carefully studied and carried forward to the last scenes of earth's history, and their fulfillment in the last days makes their meaning clear to the world.

Daniel stands in his lot when the sealed testimony is proclaimed in the first angel's message, a matter of infinite importance. His prophecies when unsealed take their proper place in the first, second, and third angels' messages to the world, with future events disclosed in their order. He stands in his lot and in his place bearing his message that the time of the end is near, as truth is taught in clear lines and the third angel's message is given its place in the world.

The unsealing of the little book is the message in relation to prophetic time, whose definite reckoning reached its end in 1844. Then prophetic time closed and Jesus entered the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary to cleanse it. The waiting believers had correctly reckoned the time but had misunderstood the sanctuary and its cleansing, and no further message based on definite prophetic time would follow.

His standing in his lot to give his testimony is applied to a future time when a message appointed by God will swell into a loud cry. The messages given in 1840-1844 will be repeated with force to all the churches and swell by God's appointment into a loud cry in the short closing work while the signs of the times are fulfilling.

In the last days many are purified and made white and tried, and the wise understand, while the wicked do wickedly and do not understand. Since sin is the transgression of the law of God, those who will not accept the light upon the law will not understand the proclamation of the first, second, and third angels' messages.

The chapter is a warning that all must understand before the time of the end, showing what character must be formed to pass through the test and proving of the last days. It reproves spiritual weakness and backsliding and belief without sanctification that leads those claiming to believe the truth to say the Lord delays His coming. Daniel is to stand out conspicuously with the Revelation given to John, to be read attentively with work to be done from it, and the established points of faith and old waymarks and foundation principles greatly blessed in providence must be revived and held fast unto the end through severe trials of faith and every conceivable invention of Satan to make them of none effect.

Resurrection and Final Judgment

To rest means to lie for a time in the grave in death, but the work of God's servants does not end with this life. When the call comes they will rise and take up their work again in God's kingdom. God will reckon with each servant individually and give a reward proportionate to the use made of talents, and that reward is near.

At the end of the days each person will stand in his or her appointed lot and place at God's judgment. It is a solemn personal reckoning when the judgment sits and the books are opened and every case is brought before God. There every case is decided as each person faces the great Judge.

The aged workers who bore witness in the early days of the message are to remain in their appointed place, doing their part to save people from evil and keeping their spiritual armor on until God calls them to lay it aside. Despite infirmities they may still use their gifts in His service and occupy leading positions as valuable counselors to advance His work as long as He permits. This requires wise care of physical, mental, and spiritual strength so labor can continue, sustained only by His great mercy and grace. Their years of life and opportunity to testify are gifts of His mercy and grace, the Lord goes before His servants and gives evidence of His leading, and they should use their strength wisely rather than take burdens younger workers can carry.

Faithful Service in Appointed Place

To stand in the lot at the end of the days is for each person to stand faithfully in the duty and place and work assigned by God until the end. This standing is to be calm and trustful, strong in God's strength, without feeling the work too hard, because He gives strength to persevere and spiritual power to fulfill the responsibility. It is Daniel remaining faithful in his appointed place until the end, applied to standing faithfully in one's work during the remaining days of probation while preparing for the Lord's coming. It endures test and trial and does right because it is right.

Standing in one's lot means remaining humbly in the place and work appointed by God, looking to Him and to Christ as Saviour, Guide, and Counselor. It is serving in His way and name with wholehearted consecration, carrying out one's work in harmony with God's Spirit and with the other lines of work. Each person is to stand in the assigned place and exert a right influence in thought, word, and deed, and when all workers do this together their work becomes a complete, harmonious whole. So they stand as trees of righteousness reaching heavenward even in adversity, consecrated to God and carrying out His work where He directs them.

Every individual must stand in his own lot and place, doing his own work and bearing his weight of responsibility, for in these last days each one before God has a great and sacred and grand appointed work, and the Lord is preparing each one to do it. Each one is to be respected and honored as a brother chosen of God and precious in His sight, bearing responsibility before God in the appointed place and work to be fulfilled. No one man is to be made the counselor for all or have all plans and methods confided to him while others are left out, and since the same line of work is not given to each worker, brethren must draw closer together and counsel together in freedom and confidence, with less confidence in self and far greater confidence in the One who is mighty in counsel. Each person should serve in the work appointed, carry personal responsibilities, and not get in the way of another's work, without taking over another's task or criticizing and condemning others. God gives different workers different gifts, and they are to do their duty faithfully and humbly, giving support to that which is wholly right and helping forward the work instead of failing those who lead it, serving without drawing attention to self as distinct members of Christ's body in cooperation with the others, accountable to God and strengthened by sharing the divine nature.

Remaining at the assigned post is doing the given work with unwavering fidelity as unto God and not unto man, keeping the sacred trust by conduct that accords with heavenly principles. Those given clear light are to take their place on the Lord's side, whether present at the center of the work or absent from it, rather than working at cross purposes or aiding the enemy. This refuses confederacy and confidences with worldlings and enemies of Christ, makes no compromise with the enemy, and guards against betraying God's people into the enemy's hands through schemes to separate God from His workers. It forbids restless self-devised efforts to bring about God's promises after human ways and ideas, as Abraham and Sarah did, which result in sorrow, misery, and sin, trusting instead that God will fulfill His gracious purposes rather than trying to bring them about through restless, self-directed plans. It is taking a clear stand for righteousness and calling sin by its right name, confessing and forsaking sin, taking one's place in the work and laboring in harmony with fellow believers, overcoming sinful tendencies such as hasty speech, a violent temper, and falsely reporting matters, and those who stay in their place in obedience will see and realize the fulfillment of the gracious designs of the Lord.

Standing in one's lot is taking the place God assigns and working there with personal practical effort to reach souls, saying Here I am send me. It is planting the standard of truth where the message has not yet been heard, carrying the warning, letting the light shine, and making the truth known in the cities, a work belonging to all believers and not to ministers alone. It is lifting the cross of Calvary and catching Christ's inspiration for souls, serving as a consecrated channel to prepare people for the last day, and taking a place in proclaiming the truth entrusted in the third angel's message in the face of satanic agencies. It is serving and overcoming through faith in Christ for the sake of family, neighbors, and friends, enduring to the end while looking to the unseen Christ and using opportunities to exert a positive influence for good. The time is a test and trial in which each is to do right because it is right and work valiantly for the Master, standing watchful and earnest as the crisis approaches.

It calls for a decisive move now, giving oneself fully to God's work because time is short, and being ready to stand in the appointed place at the end. This is laboring together for the whole field, keeping the ministry sacred and expenditures low, remaining ready to serve where needed, and doing missionary work by the Holy Spirit. God's charges, appeals, and promises to Solomon apply to every person who accepts responsibility in the Lord's work and serves in that appointed place. Those serving at Huntsville School are to stand in the positions God has assigned them and do what is right during their time of testing. Those carrying on the work at Boulder Sanitarium are to remain faithful in their appointed work, with God and the right as their watchword, upholding justice, truth, and integrity. So Philip is to hope to return to service and stand faithfully through test and trial, Elder Franke is to stand in his lot by speaking to large congregations while Elder Haskell's work benefits many when those audiences become interested, and officers are to stand as guardians and shepherds fulfilling their trust.
