Daniel 12:3
And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
The promise is twofold and everlasting, that those who are wise will shine with the brightness of the sky, and those who turn many to right living will shine like the stars forever and ever. To turn many to righteousness is to lead them out of sin, error, falsehood and darkness into truth, holiness, light and righteousness, bringing them to Jesus and salvation. The wise are those who win souls, instruct others and teach the way of salvation, working together with Christ and with God, and this is the work of every follower of Jesus with no one excused. The stars in their crowns are the souls saved through unselfish, self-denying labor, and their reward is to share Christ's glory and reign with Him, rejoicing with the redeemed in heaven. This belongs to the last days when Michael stands up, there is a time of trouble without parallel, everyone found written in the book is delivered, and the sleepers in the dust awake to everlasting life or to shame and everlasting contempt.
Words of the Promise
The promise is twofold and everlasting: those who are wise will shine with the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness will shine as the stars for ever and ever. The wise are those who use God-given ability to do Christ's words, who put on Christ and receive grace by living faith while holding fast to the promises, growing in grace day by day and instructing others in the way of salvation. Their reward is to share Christ's glory and reign with Him, belonging to the final conflict when the righteousness of obedience to God is seen and acknowledged throughout the universe, and to the time of trouble and deliverance when God's people are delivered and the sleepers in the dust awake to their final outcomes. That setting gives urgency in the last days to preparing people for the Lord's coming and warning them to turn to righteousness.
To turn many to righteousness is to lead sinners from sin, error, falsehood and darkness to truth, holiness, light and righteousness. It is to bring people to Jesus and salvation, presenting the truth so that they accept it, are sanctified through it, and are redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. This saving work joins workers with Christ and angels, and each person brought to praise God and receive everlasting life becomes a lasting reward, richly recompensed in heaven. Those rescued and finally saved through faithful labor are the honor that shines as stars forever.
That honor endures forever, in contrast to worldly ambitions, plans, projects, purposes and enterprises, which perish and fade like grass. All worldly enterprises, despite their great cost, are trifling perishable trash beside the value of one soul saved to shine in the kingdom through eternal ages. Lasting honor requires service holy at the root, bearing sound healthy fruit acceptable to God, for splendid service without self-surrender is not accepted. Those who in Christ's stead entreat souls to be reconciled to God must therefore show undying interest by precept and example, with earnestness, perseverance, self-denial and sacrifice exceeding the diligence of those seeking earthly gain.
After the awakening to everlasting life, this shining is the crown of eternal rejoicing. Its brightness will be bright or dim according to each person's own course of action in probationary time. Probation is the permitted sowing time for the future harvest: sowing bountifully in faith and love reaps a bountiful eternal harvest, while sowing sparingly reaps sparingly. Making calling and election sure secures the rich inheritance, while a wrong course defrauds of the far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.
Prophetic Time and Setting
The promise belongs to the time when Michael stands up for his people, when there comes a time of trouble without parallel, when everyone found written in the book is delivered, and when those sleeping in the dust of the earth awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt. It belongs to that coming judgment when every person is repaid for his work, with lasting brightness and glory given to the wise who instruct others and to those who turn many to right living. This work belongs to the last days, when God's people are delivered and the dead are raised, and its reward lasts forever.
Its setting is the final conflict, when the righteousness of obedience to God will be seen and acknowledged throughout the universe. In that time the wise who have been purified, made white, and tried will understand, while the wicked remain in their wickedness and do not understand. The use of entrusted means is weighed in that same setting, including whether it helps lead others to righteousness.
Daniel's visions were sealed to be understood at the time of the end, and Daniel 12 is a warning that all must read, study, and understand before the end. It shows what character must be formed in order to pass through the test and proving of the last days, reproving spiritual weakness and backsliding and not knowing what is believed. It warns ministers who claim to believe the truth but are not sanctified through it that unless a change comes they will say, My Lord delayeth His coming.
Its fulfillment is close and calls for courageous immediate work in view of God's short decisive final work on earth, seizing present opportunities for labor. It gives urgency to preparing people for the Lord's coming and warning them to turn to righteousness. The testing time is right upon us and the end of all things is at hand, with eternal principles of truth to be presented now to show what will take place on earth. At the appointed time God will confirm the testimony of His servants as they give the loud cry, and those who build upon the Rock will stand through the storm of test and trial.
Troublous times are before us, the world is stirred with the spirit of war, and the time of trouble spoken of in Daniel 12:1-4 is now being entered and is to be read and understood by all. The prophecy of Daniel 11 is nearly completely fulfilled, and much of its fulfilled history will be repeated as the scenes of trouble soon take place.
The work of turning people to righteousness helps prepare the world and the earth to joyfully receive its King, done by servants working with consecrated zeal. The shining follows Christ's deliverance of those whose names are written in the book of life and His destruction of Satan and his followers.
Identity of the Wise
The wise are those who win souls, who instruct others and teach the way of salvation, working together with Christ and working with God through the eternal ages. To be wise is to work in this life for the glory of God by winning souls to Jesus Christ even when the work seems very discouraging, for turning even one soul from error to righteousness causes joy in heaven with the Father and Son rejoicing among angels and songs of triumph echoing through the courts of heaven. They are trained workers who feel dependence on God and go clothed with the power of the Holy Spirit to carry the closing message when time is short, and under the promised outpouring of the Spirit the nations are made light with glory, converts are gathered in final triumph like sheaves for harvest, and workers laboring with unselfish zeal receive lasting brightness as reward. They grow in knowledge of the truth and become ministers leading others to righteousness, which requires a living working church of high spirituality and holiness and careful lives in leaders that gather with Christ rather than scatter, with experimental religion, individual consecration, personal conversion and Christ enshrined in the soul, since without these profession is useless and worse than never embracing truth, and since Satan seeks to defeat the purpose by lowering spirituality and by marriage connections that hinder ministry.
They put on Christ, receive grace by living faith, hold fast to the promises of His Word, and grow in grace day by day. Wisdom in soul-winning is learned by bearing Christ's yoke and copying His meekness and lowliness, and what is received is to be continually shared with others. They have Jesus in the life in restfulness and peace, continually growing and full of good and noble works for the Master, forgetting self-seeking and self-serving, coming closer in sympathy and love to the Saviour with character fragrant with good works, treasuring every human being as bought by Christ's blood, keeping the eye single to God's glory against ambitious distractions, pressing toward the mark of the prize, and crowding this life with all possible good and holy works as Jesus did. This is a life lived in Christ that makes others know fellowship with Jesus has been learned, with the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus kept in view.
When Christ comes to close this short scene of warfare and conflict, the wise stand at the post of duty against incoming evil, close up the ranks and take up the work when fellow workers fall, resist sin and the powers of darkness with energetic and determined activity for present truth, endure storms and conflicts to perfect Christian character, become better acquainted with God the Father and Christ the elder Brother, and spend their last efforts in winning many souls to Christ. They are faithful in the appointed work of copying the divine Pattern, relying in loving confidence upon Christ's merits and taking hold of His strength, day by day subduing evil traits that strive for mastery, and by earnest faith and loving obedience coming into close relationship with Christ as John did. They will be acknowledged as heroes in the heavenly courts, divine grace made manifest in them makes them reflect bright light to the world now, and by and by they will shine forever as stars in the kingdom of heaven.
The promise was spoken of Daniel himself to encourage wisdom and leading others to righteousness. It is exemplified by Olaf and Lawrence Patersen, born in Orebro, as the first preachers of Lutheran doctrine in Sweden who turned many to righteousness and are among the wise who shine as the brightness of the firmament and as the stars forever. It includes faithful physicians who discharge professional duties faithfully, whose trials when prejudice is aroused and obstacles strewn in the path only reveal pure gold of character with Christ as refuge from strife of tongues, so that though the life is hard and self-denying and looks like failure in the world's estimation, in Heaven it is success, its owner is ranked as one of God's noblemen and will shine forever with the brightness of the firmament and the stars. The wise do the special work of saving the world given to those who remain in the world as long as God permits, without depending on the world so as to compromise truth, without bribing or seeking its favor by bowing to human laws and setting aside God's law, and without coming into bondage to it.
Work of Turning Many
Turning many to righteousness is the work of everyone who claims to follow Christ, with no one excused from doing what has been given them to do. It is not the work of ministers alone but belongs to every disciple, however weak. It is done by giving all body and soul and power and time to God instead of devoting them to worldly pleasures in eating and drinking and dressing, by using reasoning powers, ability and intellect not for worldly matters alone but for God's glory, and by taking Christ into the life to represent Him with more of Jesus and less of self. As soon as truth enters the heart there is duty to give that precious truth to others as co-laborers with Christ under God as supreme Ruler, and each will be judged according to the light given. This calls for earnest and persevering work, giving back to His service all entrusted, improving every qualification to His glory, taking hold of the work understandingly, cutting loose from earthly things, directing attention heavenward, living as those bought with precious blood, enlisting as servants in His army, fighting the Lord's battles, and putting all ability and tact into whatever department one is engaged in.
Those engaged in this service place themselves where God can bless them, and His blessing and glory rest upon them, which is how they shine. Turning many means becoming interested in souls and working for time and eternity under commission from the kingdom of heaven to go forth and proclaim the gospel everywhere and lead others to heaven. An angel is close beside everyone who becomes interested in a soul to move that soul, giving the worker the companionship of angels.
The work includes helping people learn essential Bible truths and bringing them to knowledge of the truth and salvation, which is urgent because time is short and brings enduring reward. God's people are to be the light of the world by gathering divine light from the Bible and letting it shine to those in darkness by character and life, teaching them the way to heaven, which Christ dwelling in the heart by faith enables them to know and teach. Each converted person is to give the measure of light entrusted to them to help others know the truth, and as they share that light it grows brighter.
It is done by proclaiming the message and present truth and helping bring others to righteousness through that proclamation. It includes canvassing and sowing seeds of truth in good soil with humility and earnest energy, refusing time for selfish pleasure, to pull souls out of the fire and seize precious opportunities that would otherwise leave souls unheeded and lost. Those preparing for ministry by gaining knowledge of God's word and sharing its truth are included, and circulating truth-filled books brings the light of present truth to those in darkness and saves from sin, so that those turned from sin and darkness shine in the kingdom. It also embraces missionary correspondence and neighborhood labor, sharing publications, praying for the sick, and personal unselfish effort, through which converts shine. Those who use opportunities to help save others gain a star-gemmed crown, while those who hide talents by neglecting people around them lose those opportunities, and the stars represent an everlasting reward more than repaying self-denial and sacrifice.
It requires using what God has entrusted as His stewards to spread knowledge of heavenly truth of heavenly origin as mission fields constantly open, supporting and building up the truth. Those who so use entrusted means, time and resources are missionaries of God and co-workers with Christ, standing heart to heart with one mind, one voice and one judgment in united defense of triumphant truth, while angels watch character development and weigh moral worth and a daily record of work is made in heaven's books as truth advances toward God's great day and final completion which no discord can retard. A sick person who arranges earthly means so that after death it still sends beams of the Sun of Righteousness and light of truth into dark places, by donating to sustain and advance the various lines of God's cause instead of leaving means to unbelievers who will not use it for truth, becomes a laborer together with God, advances His work, and turns many to righteousness. The warning is to be given whether men hear or forbear by bringing souls to knowledge of Christ so each becomes a worker for others' salvation, and turning even one soul whose name is registered in the book of life means labor is not failure, with eternity to reveal many wonderful histories from efforts that seemed fruitless.
To be wise is to become burdened to warn people and turn many as missionaries, a call for those who received truth in America to carry it to countrymen in Europe and to get it before people in great cities, and to go even to foreign countries to present truth to those in darkness. Parents turn many by lifting God's standard in the home and by education, training, patience, prayer and watchfulness helping the household stand as overcomers, so that all converts become spiritual children in addition to children by birth and parents present themselves at the city gates with all their biological and spiritual children. Children taught and souls gathered to the cross are living stones that will endure last-day fires unlike human monuments that fall. Faithful witnesses in France are pictured as stars in the crown of rejoicing of those who patiently seek them out and labor to spread the message, and faithful efforts to develop neglected or seemingly unpromising people can make them successful workers, with the full good known only in eternity. This consecrates self and talents to God, gains experience in bearing burdens and knowledge of Scriptures so the work can be accepted, and does as much as possible for the Master instead of as little as possible, since indolence and spiritual sloth, selfishness and pride leaving little room for heavenly things, and unwillingness to take responsibility shut out the reward.
Shining requires purifying of the church beginning in the office and going through the institutions. It requires the love Jesus manifested toward men, not hardheartedness and a disposition to tear down and destroy. Suspicion, jealousy, evil-surmising, unrighteous suggestions, false witness, and catching up reproaches or anything giving occasion to treat His purchased possession with suspicion prevent shining, separate souls from God's love, and make men instrumentalities through whom Satan works to discourage, hurt and destroy souls instead of turning them to righteousness.
True and lasting prosperity is being wise and turning many to righteousness, which gives lasting brightness. It is God's voice calling away from building prosperity on ruins of truth and from loving silver and gold and abundance, which never satisfies the heart and after seeming prosperity ends in retribution, many sorrows and piercing.
Nature of the Reward
The reward is to share Christ's glory and reign with Him, rejoicing with the redeemed in heaven amid songs of triumph and victory echoing through the courts of heaven. Even turning one soul from the error of his way to righteousness causes joy in heaven, with the Father and the Son rejoicing in the presence of the angels. Those who use their God-given abilities to do Christ's words and who work in this life for the glory of God by winning souls to Jesus Christ, even when the work seems very discouraging, will shine brightly forever like the brightness of the sky and the stars. This calls for lives refined, ennobled, and elevated like Christ's, with Christ formed within as the hope of glory, leading to laying aside favorite sins, fearing to offend God, and loving His law. Those who faithfully labor to save souls share in the glory of the Redeemer, and their saved ones will be a source of joy in heaven.
The stars in the crowns are the souls saved through unselfish, self-denying labor and personal effort, and this everlasting reward more than repays self-denial and sacrifice for God. Souls won through faithful kindness, prayer, example, and work for Christ become a source of rejoicing, like stars in a crown of rejoicing. Winning souls is the way to gain stars for one's crown by turning many from sin to righteousness. A soul gains immortality, escapes the pains of the second death, and receives the honors and glory of living in the presence of Him who died to elevate, ennoble, and give the overcomer a royal diadem. One soul saved will shine in the kingdom of heaven throughout eternal ages, proving the work of saving souls is of far greater value than all worldly enterprises, which are trifling, perishable trash despite their great cost.
In heaven the faithful soul-winner beholds with joy the redeemed he was instrumental in saving, gratefully remembered by them, gathered as white-robed ones within the fold of the great Shepherd. They are greeted by the Lamb seated in the midst of the throne and led to the tree of life and the fountain of living waters as sharers of the Redeemer's throne, and heaven itself is more precious to him because he was faithful in saving others. Those who present the truth and help people be saved will have the people finally saved as their joy and reward, and will eternally know the satisfaction of having helped them receive truth and redemption, meeting them in the heavenly courts among the glorified. Pleasing God and doing one's mission by saving the precious souls around oneself brings the eternal weight of glory, which is seeing Jesus who suffered and died a shameful death on Calvary, casting the crown at His feet, and touching the golden harp to fill all heaven with music. Each person saved brings joy in heaven, and that person's godly influence can lead others to salvation, multiplying the work whose full extent will be revealed at the judgment. Children taught and souls gathered to the cross are living stones that will endure the fires of the last day, unlike human monuments, which will fall.
The glorified are radiant, rising with individual identity preserved and faces shining with light from Jesus. At the deliverance of God's people, those who honored His holy law have faces lit up, reflecting the image of Jesus, and their glory is so great that their enemies cannot endure its radiance. Turning souls to righteousness is an excellent work in God's sight with the greatest reward in the kingdom of heaven, a share in Christ's work of saving those ready to perish. Work done for the Master lasts for time and eternity, built not with hay and stubble but with gold and silver and precious stones that cannot be consumed. Those who lead sinners to Christ and direct the unbelieving and discouraged toward heaven do work that God accepts, and when their work is finished they will be welcomed to the joy of their Lord.
Those who believe God's truth, suffer persecution, and remain faithful and obedient to all God's requirements will receive salvation and a crown brilliant with stars. Those who overcome self through faith and God's grace and power will receive a glorious crown in God's kingdom, brilliant with stars and with immortal glory. Keeping close connection with God and continuing faithfully in well-doing means faithful attention to duties that helps save others, tasking the memory not to forget, lifting responsibilities and seeing what needs to be done without being told, and going to God in humility to plead for wisdom and grace to overcome deficiencies and neglect, pleading His promises for help. Amid widespread backsliding, the few who remain heartily devoted to God shine here and there like stars seen through clouds on a stormy night. God's people, as He perfects them, will shine in the kingdom of glory, and working with Him to bring souls to salvation is part of this work.
Present Call to Action
Because time is short no opportunity to lead people to righteousness should be neglected, for the wise shine eternally and those who turn many to righteousness shine like stars, and that turning includes helping them learn essential Bible truths and reach salvation. Church members fulfill this calling by accepting responsibility to work for the salvation of people in their neighborhoods, using their abilities in consecrated service under the Saviour's commission. What people do is to be directed toward the everlasting well-being of themselves and those connected with them, giving eternal weight to work that helps others find righteousness. Those who pray and work for souls to bring them to truth and make them right with God will be among the shining ones in the kingdom. This work of turning wandering ones back to the fold by living faith laying hold of divinity must be pressed on without delay, with no time to lose while the day lasts.
The promise encourages believers to endure conflict and toil and keep working to win souls to Christ, making present suffering and sacrifice for Him worth enduring for everlasting glory and reason to rejoice in hope of heaven. Its fulfillment is close, belonging to the time when Michael stands up, unprecedented trouble comes, everyone written in the book is delivered, sleepers awake to everlasting life or shame and everlasting contempt, and each is repaid for his work at judgment. In that setting those wise in seizing present opportunities for labor and turning many to right living receive lasting brightness and glory, calling for courageous immediate work in view of God's short decisive final work. Those who lay plans hindering the cause of truth will be held responsible for all resulting evil and harm.
Believers must be lights to a crooked and perverse nation, seeking a better country and Christ's perfect pattern by active soul-saving as He did to help the poor and needy and those knowing only suffering and bereavement, giving extras from dress and life to relieve them. Lasting brightness is reason to work actively rather than fold hands in ease in the devil's easy chair deceived, refusing time for selfish pleasure and laboring with earnest energy to pull souls from the fire and seize otherwise lost opportunities, including canvassing, sowing truth in good soil, and seeking grace in humility. Young Christians are appointed co-laborers in this turning of souls from sin to righteousness among souls all around by earnest efforts to encourage and bless, with accountability to God, faithfulness in prayer, and watchfulness against Satan's temptations. They mourn moral darkness instead of indulging levity and pride of dress, sighing and crying for abominations and resisting vanity, trimmings, ornaments for display and frivolous things that narrow and dwarf the mind from high responsibilities. Students are to be trained for service to understand Scripture and help others receive its truth, with workers needed to bring present truth to neglected people.
The ambition to win souls to righteousness ends contention and fulfills Christ's prayer when it is the chief aim. Brethren then stand heart to heart with one mind, one voice and one judgment in united defense of triumphant truth as stewards using entrusted means to spread heavenly-origin truth and support ever-opening mission fields, as true missionaries and co-laborers with Christ. Meanwhile angels watch character development and weigh moral worth in sanctuary balances, heaven keeps a daily record of every man's work, and truth advances toward God's great day and final completion which no discord can retard. Medical missionary workers learn from the shining promise their personal responsibility before God to stand in their own place rather than depend on a human guide.
Those who care for sinners and use opportunities to help save them gain a star-gemmed crown, while the indifferent who hide talents by neglecting people around them throw those opportunities away. Indolence and spiritual sloth, selfishness and pride leaving little room for heavenly things, and unwillingness to take responsibility shut people out from stars in crowns for souls saved. God accepts only work of consecrated self and talents, experience in burden-bearing and Scripture knowledge, going even to foreign countries to present truth to those in darkness and doing as much as possible for the Master instead of as little as possible while hoping for heaven. The wise grow in knowledge of truth to become ministers teaching salvation and leading the unbelieving and discouraged to Christ and heaven, rewarded when work is done. This requires a living working church of high spirituality and holiness with leaders gathering with Christ not scattering, with experimental religion, individual consecration, personal conversion and Christ enshrined, since Satan seeks to defeat it by lowering spirituality and by marriage connections hindering ministry, without which profession is useless and worse than never embracing truth.
Turning many to righteousness is saving souls from death and gathering precious sheaves into God's garner, making victories through Christ precious at last so that separation from friends, self-denial and enduring anything are worthwhile. Faithful kindness, prayer and example that patiently develop neglected or seemingly unpromising people into successful workers bring lasting honor as stars in a crown. The full good accomplished will be known only in eternity.
