I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.
Daniel 7:15 belongs to the vision of the four beasts, which represent the successive empires of Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. The beast described in Revelation 13 inherits the power of those four beasts. The vision was given to Daniel while he was learning court duties in Babylon, because of his firmness, self-denial, purity of motive, and unwavering trust in God. In this he was honored as God's ambassador with revelations of the mysteries of ages to come, recorded in Daniel 7-12.
The spirit of prophetic power came upon him, giving him understanding in all visions and dreams and teaching him to read the mysteries of the future. Through figures and symbols he recorded for coming generations events covering the history of this world in their historical order until the close of time, and the prophecy is to be studied carefully. Daniel was grieved in spirit and troubled by the visions because even he did not fully understand the wonderful prophecies, for it was not given him to understand all that God had revealed of the divine purpose.
The grief and troubled visions in this verse are left without specific explanation. Before his life labors closed, Daniel was given the blessed assurance that at the end of the days, in the closing period of this world's history, he would again be permitted to stand in his lot and place.
