Daniel Sees the Ram and the GoatBible World

Daniel 8:20

The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.

The ram with two horns is the kings of Media and Persia. Its two horns are the two divisions of that empire, with the Persian division becoming the greater and rising up later. The ram was a recognized emblem of the Medes and Persians, whose kings wore a gold diadem shaped like a ram's head.

The verse belongs to the wonderful prophecies of Daniel 7-12, a vision received directly from God as revelation of the mysteries of ages to come. Even Daniel himself did not fully understand it, and not all of the divine purpose in it was given for him to understand. Its words were to be shut up and sealed until the time of the end, because the vision was given especially for the last days. Its foretold events are now being fulfilled and will soon come to pass.

Daniel 8 is connected with prophetic periods whose historical and chronological reckoning begins in 457 B.C. Since the ram's symbol was already explained in chapter 8, the later explanation in chapter 9 concerns the time period left unexplained, not the ram. Daniel was given assurance that at the end of the days, in the closing period of this world's history, he would rest and stand again in his lot and place.
