Daniel Sees the Ram and the Goat at Sunsetby MarkWilson
8:21Daniel 8:21
And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.
The rough goat is the kingdom of Greece, and the great horn between its eyes is its first king. That first king is Alexander, who defeated Persia at the Battle of Arbela in 331 B.C. and died in 323 B.C. at age 33. The prophecy containing this identification applies to historical Rome rather than to Antiochus Epiphanes, apart from any particular explanation of the goat or its great horn.
The verse belongs to the revelations in Daniel 7 to 12 of the mysteries of ages to come. Even Daniel did not fully understand it, for it was not given to him to understand all that God had revealed of the divine purpose. Its words were to be shut up and the book sealed until the time of the end, with the assurance that at the end of the days, in the closing period of this world's history, Daniel would rest and then stand again in his lot and place.
The vision to which the verse belongs was given especially for the last days, and the events it foretells, including the history represented by its symbols, are now being fulfilled and will soon come to pass.
