Daniel 8:22

Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.

The broken great horn is succeeded by four horns that are four kingdoms arising out of Alexander's Greek nation after his death, but without his power. They were Macedonia, Thrace, Syria, and Egypt, ruled respectively by Cassander, Lysimachus, Seleucus, and Ptolemy. The meaning of these kingdoms was part of the vision already explained, while the remaining uncertainty in the chapter concerned the 2300-day period, not these kingdoms. The little horn that follows these kingdoms is Rome rather than Antiochus Epiphanes, since the symbols and the specifications of the little horn fit the historical facts of Rome. The vision containing this succession was given especially for the last days, and its foretold events are now unfolding and will soon come to pass.
