Daniel 8:8

Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.

Therefore the he goat waxed very great belongs to the wonderful prophecies of Daniel 7 to 12, given by God to Daniel as His ambassador as revelations of the mysteries of ages to come. Its prophecy has Rome for its subject, not Antiochus Epiphanes. It stands in a vision whose goat symbol had already been explained by Gabriel. It gives no further explanation of the he-goat's broken horn or the four horns. The prophetic periods of its chapter are reckoned from 457 B.C.

The part Daniel still did not understand was the time period of the 2300 days. Even Daniel himself did not fully understand it, and it was not given him to understand all that had been revealed, for the words were to be shut up and the book sealed even to the time of the end. Its message was given especially for the last days, and its events are now being fulfilled and will soon come to pass. Daniel was given the assurance that at the end of the days, in the closing period of this world's history, he would rest and then stand again in his lot and place.
