Deuteronomy 10:9

Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God promised him.

Levi received no landed inheritance or share of the land among the other tribes of Israel because the Lord Himself was his inheritance. The Levites instead lived in cities set apart for them. They served at the sanctuary and were supported by tithes, gifts, and offerings devoted to God's service. They taught the people and were honored as God's servants and representatives, so Israel was commanded not to neglect them. In the time of Christ, priests and Levites were still regarded as devoted to temple service and therefore exempt from the annual contribution for the temple's support.
