Deuteronomy 11:26

Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;

God sets before His people in the present a real decision between blessing and curse, with a clear separation between the obedient and the disobedient and no middle ground. The blessing rests on hearing and doing the commandments of the Lord, while the curse falls when people refuse to obey and turn aside from the commanded way to follow other gods they have not known. Obedience and disobedience bring opposite results of reward and retribution, life and prosperity against death, for present and future good. What was spoken to Israel in Moses' instruction before entering Canaan is spoken as truly to believers now who await His coming and kingdom, calling for active choice rather than idleness or indifference. The law intended for blessing becomes a curse when light is not obeyed, so choosing blessing means purifying the mind by obeying the truth and remaining in God's love through prayer, humility, living faith, and corresponding obedience.

Meaning and Setting

Behold, this day a real choice is set before God's people between a blessing and a curse, with a decided difference placed between the obedient and the disobedient and no middle ground left open. The blessing is promised if they obey the commandments of the Lord their God, and the curse is threatened if they will not obey. That word put blessing in front of them upon obedience and curse upon refusal, and its lesson holds with the greatest importance.

The blessing comes upon hearing and doing God's will, for blessings depend on obedience to His commandments. Loyalty to His commands brings the promised good, while refusal brings the opposite. Obedience to what the Lord commands secures blessing, and the choice turns on faithfulness to that command.

The curse comes if they will not obey but turn aside out of the way commanded them, to go after other gods which they have not known. Disobedience is turning away from the commanded path to worship strange gods, and upon that turning the curse rests. The following verses make this plain, that blessing follows obedience to God's commandments and curse follows disobedience and going after other gods.

Obedience and disobedience have opposite outcomes of reward and retribution. Obedience brings life and prosperity, while disobedience brings death. These consequences concern present and future good. A person's true condition is decided by God, so that whom God blesses is blessed and whom God curses is cursed.

The word belongs to Moses' rehearsal of instruction to Israel before entering Canaan, among the important teachings to be remembered and taken seriously. It stands as part of the instruction in Deuteronomy 4-11 that expresses God's will and requirements and shows His dealings with His people, with Deuteronomy 11:26-32 setting out His will including the blessing and the curse. The verses that follow explain the blessing and the curse, connecting blessing with obedience and curse with turning aside. The law and its conditions were to be repeatedly taught to the people so they would understand the consequences of their choice, taught to children in daily life, remembered, and sung among the congregations so they would not be forgotten.

Warning and Application Today

What was spoken to Israel is spoken as truly to believers now, and its lesson is of the greatest importance, applying to God's commandment-keeping people while awaiting His coming and kingdom. The choice is being fulfilled now as everyone takes sides, calling for an active, timely decision rather than idleness or indifference. Danger remains of turning from God by following deceptive teachings and false science instead of Christ's words.

The word was verified when Israel disobeyed and only two of the adults who left Egypt entered Canaan while the rest died in the wilderness, and disobedience led to destruction and ruin. Obedience brings abundant blessing and protection from sickness. The same principle of accountability applies in the present, for God remains particular about obedience and will vindicate His word today if leaders depart from His commandments, and carelessness can keep His people from receiving His blessing.

The consequences reach land, earth, animals, and people. Disobedience brings loss of rain and fruitfulness of the land, sickness among cattle, and poor crops, bringing a curse upon earth, animals, and people, while obedience brings blessing. Departing from God brings ruin, while loving and serving God wholeheartedly in humble obedience apart from the world brings abundant blessing and protection from sickness.

The law meant to be a blessing becomes a curse when people depart from God and fail to obey the light received, for spiritual advantages and knowledge of truth do not by themselves preserve them. They must remain in God's love through prayer, humility, living faith, and corresponding obedience, and choosing blessing involves purifying the mind by obeying the truth. A person's true condition is decided by God so that whom God blesses is blessed and whom God curses is cursed, requiring fearing God and working righteousness, cleansing the soul temple of defilement, laying hold on eternal life, and proving love for God's cause by humble, meek, lowly labor anywhere instead of weakening oneself through jealousy, distrust, envy, stubbornness, and folly.

The instruction means much to every soul with responsibilities in sanitarium work, especially leaders, calling for careful observance of all God's directions from greatest to least, with purified souls, consecrated loving service, and obedience in word and deportment. For Seventh-day Adventists today God sets a blessing if they obey and a curse if they disobey: walking in the Lord's way and refusing selfish control brings valuable experience, spiritual knowledge, and divine favor. Remaining in Battle Creek contrary to the Lord's will forfeits His favor and loses the experience and knowledge obedience would have gained, and congests the heart of the work after long warning, from hearts and minds not under the Holy Spirit's influence, from not realizing the work to be done, and from being asleep.

The choice applies to parents and families in the present day of trust before a coming day of reckoning, underscoring the urgency of faithful work for children. It warns against neglecting that work, calls parents to set their hearts in order and seek their children's conversion, to teach the commandments daily, and to follow God's law with their children so they receive blessing and avoid the curse. Raising children to reject God's commandments brings them up in disobedience and leaves a sad record.

God sets before every person this day a blessing and a curse with no middle ground, with blessing and peace promised to all who obey and a curse resting on all who do not obey. Obedience means loving and serving God wholeheartedly in humble obedience apart from the world, fearing God and keeping His commandments as the whole duty of man and the condition of kingdom membership, loving the Lord with all heart, soul, strength, and mind and loving neighbor as self, and faithfulness with means under the tithing system to sustain the gospel. Disobedience means idolatry and rebellion, receiving food, clothing, and earthly bounties from God's liberality and appropriating them for convenience and pleasure without heeding His word, as Adam did with the forbidden tree, and becoming selfish, misusing entrusted means, failing to sustain His work, incurring guilt for lost souls and retarded work, and rendering an account to God.
