Deuteronomy 12:30
Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
The verse concerns the nations of Canaan driven out and destroyed from before Israel, whose idolatrous religious practices had brought judgment upon them. It warns God's people not to inquire how those nations served and worshiped their gods, saying they will do likewise, lest such curious inquiry snare them and draw them into the same idolatry. The caution is against being led to study foreign worship in order to copy its practices. It belongs to God's call to obey His commands exactly, without adding to them or taking away from them, and to live differently from those nations.
The same principle extends to pictures and likenesses, which can exert a perverting influence that turns minds away from God's Word. Representations employed in religious publications must therefore not distort sacred truth.
