Israelite Refuses a False Prophet's Idolby emmanuel_higgins

Deuteronomy 13:2

And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;

Even if the announced sign or wonder actually comes to pass, the presence of a prophet among the people does not settle the question by miracle alone. In that case the commandments are set before the people as a test of character, and by obedience to them truth is distinguished from error. Sanctification comes through the truth, not through emotion or feeling, so excitement and marvels cannot sanctify the soul.

Therefore the Scriptures must be searched to know what is truth, that the soul may be laid on a sure foundation. That foundation will stand in trial and will secure eternal life for those built upon it. Christ kept His Father's commandments and stands as the perfect pattern of obedience to be copied. Those who follow Him must keep the commandments from the heart, studying to carry out in life the principles of the Sabbath commandment that God placed at the heart of His law.
