Deuteronomy 15:12
And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee. And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
The release required after six years of service governs how a creditor is to treat a brother or sister who has been sold into service and cannot pay a debt. It calls for mercy, compassion, and tenderness toward such a debtor rather than hard exaction. To press a legal right in a way that wrongs the debtor violates its intent, and to do right in these dealings is a matter of eternal interest.
