Deuteronomy 16:20

That which is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

The command was part of God's instruction to Israel given through Moses. Its principles were to shape the life and practice of God's people and their institutions, and following them would place them on vantage ground. It calls God's people, and especially their rulers, to actively pursue what is wholly just. That pursuit means judging righteously and fairly, without favoritism and without gifts or bribes that distort judgment, so that taking bribes and perverting judgment is a violation of the command. It includes dealing fairly with widows and fatherless children. Following what is just in this way is linked to living and inheriting the land that the Lord God gives.
