And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
Israel passed to the south of Edom and then turned north toward the promised land over a vast elevated plain swept by cool fresh breezes from the hills. That open high country was a welcome change from the parched valley, and they crossed it buoyant and hopeful. Having crossed the brook Zered, they passed to the east of Moab because God commanded them to distress not the Moabites nor contend with them in battle, since Ar was given to the children of Lot. The same direction was given concerning the Ammonites as descendants of Lot.
From there Israel crossed the river Arnon and advanced against the Amorites, defeated them in battle, and then followed up the victory by taking possession of the country of the Amorites. The Lord delivered the enemy before Israel, and Israel struck him with his sons and all his people. That triumph was wrought by the Captain of the Lord's host vanquishing the enemies of His people.
The chapter containing this victory sets forth the blessings of obedience and the warnings against disobedience. The same power that wrought this deliverance would have given Israel victory thirty-eight years before had Israel trusted Him.
