Deuteronomy 2:7
For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing. For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
Deuteronomy 2 sets forth the blessings and promises of obedience together with warnings against disobedience and transgression, and its promises are to be read and repeated again and again, this verse standing among those blessings of obedience. It declares that the Lord blessed all the work of the hand, knew and watched over the walking through the great wilderness, remained with His people through the forty years, and provided for them so that they lacked nothing. That abiding presence and full provision continued even while Israel was living under judgment and rejection during the forty years of wandering.
In its setting the declaration belongs to God's directions for Israel's route past Moab and Ammon, whose lands they were not to take as a possession and over which they were not to fight. Because God had supplied everything they needed and blessed them throughout the journey, Israel was not dependent on Edom for supplies, and therefore was not to take Edomite goods by force or fraud but was to trade fairly and deal justly with them. The same truth stands connected with Israel's victory over the Amorites as proof that the Lord was their helper, who could have given them possession of the land thirty-eight years earlier if they had trusted Him.
