Deuteronomy 22:25
But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die: But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die:
If a man finds a woman pledged in marriage out in the field and seizes her by force and lies with her, then the man alone who lay with her is to die. No sentence of death rests on the woman, for she is to be regarded as overpowered rather than consenting. The law treats her as a victim of violence, not as a willing participant in the act.
That sentence of death belonged to the order given for the theocracy. It is not to be taken up as the warrant for civil law in a society that is not under such a theocracy. Rulers in ordinary civil life may punish such crimes by their own authority, but they are not to claim that in doing so they are enforcing God's law, and the vindication of divine justice is to be left to God himself.
The same protection covers Zion as one betrothed to the Prince of Peace. When the emissary of Satan comes to entice her and draw her away from her Lord, she is not left without help. She may flee for refuge to the Lord, who delivers the forced and unwilling from the guilt and power of the oppressor.
