For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.
All who use divers measures, unjust weights, false balances, and every form of unrighteous dealing are an abomination and detestable to the Lord. Strict honesty is required in all measuring and weighing, with a perfect and just weight and measure, just balances, just weights, a just ephah and a just hin, and no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in measuring land, in weight, or in measure. His people are to keep all His statutes and judgments because He is the Lord, and blessing is pledged to those who walk in His way and do justice and judgment.
Cheating in business is condemned even in practices that may seem small. Taking advantage of occasions and circumstances to make money is forbidden, as is setting forth the benefits of property in a strong light, exaggerating its praise and value, keeping back unfavorable facts and hiding defects, deceiving purchasers, dealing falsely, lying to one another, stealing, defrauding or robbing a neighbor, and asserting that property will rise or double in value to secure a sale. The rule is to do unto others as one would be done unto in the same position.
God does not sanction arbitrary authority, selfishness, overreaching, injustice and oppression, and His cause is free from every taint of injustice and seeks no advantage by depriving members of His family of their individuality or rights. This standard of justice applies to business dealings, including business connected with the Lord's work, especially publishing houses in dealing with God's workers, forbidding narrow, shortsighted, oppressive plans that crowd down and trammel with restrictions the workers used to diffuse light. The physician's work and measures are accountable to God, and the commandments are to be the standard for daily conduct.
Taking advantage of people who are weak and weary is condemned after the practice of heathen Amalek in smiting those behind Israel when faint and weary because he feared not God. Those who profess to be His children journeying under His leading are warned not to follow Amalek lest they receive the curse pronounced upon Amalek to blot out his remembrance from under heaven, with still greater condemnation upon those with light and privileges who do not manifest the spirit of Christ toward their brethren. Those who practice such buying and selling, especially in real estate, violate conscience and must cut loose from it before they can be considered or remain healthful branches of the church.
