Deuteronomy 25:2

And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.

Deuteronomy 25:2 stands in the second of three addresses given by Moses just before his death. That second address covers chapters 5 to 26 and reviews the law for the new generation. It is the section from which the book takes the name Deuteronomy, meaning second law or duplicate of the law. It is distinct from chapters 1 to 4:40, which rehearse God's goodness to Israel, and from chapters 27 to 30, which renew the covenant.

Within that review, the verse belongs to the repetition of various laws in chapters 23 to 26 concerning duties between people and people and between people and God.
