Deuteronomy 28:49
The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;
Deuteronomy 28 is the chapter that sets out the blessings of obedience and the curse that follows disobedience, forsaking God and transgressing His commandments. As a covenant curse within that chapter, the verse means that when Israel turns from obedience and transgresses the law, the Lord will bring against them a distant nation from far away, from the end of the earth, advancing with eagle-like speed and speaking a language they cannot understand. Moses was inspired to look far into the future in thus foretelling Israel's final national overthrow and the destruction of Jerusalem by Rome. That foretelling was fulfilled in the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman armies under Titus.
The chapter shows that the Lord's promises and Israel's prosperity or adversity depend on obedience, with life given for doing His judgments and keeping His ordinances and statutes. Together with Deuteronomy 1 it explains why the adult generation of the army that left Egypt was refused entrance into the promised land. The chapter plainly expresses the principles of the law of God's kingdom made specific so that minds are not left in ignorance and uncertainty. It lays a never-ceasing obligation on all who are blessed with life, health, and temporal and spiritual advantages. Its message has not grown weak with age, for God's claims remain as binding now and as fresh in importance as His gifts are fresh and continual.
The verse belongs to the teaching that the diseases afflicting the earth come because people transgress God's law and break down the barriers He erected to preserve them in health and holiness. Diligently listening to the Lord's voice and doing right and keeping His commandments and statutes keeps away the diseases brought upon the Egyptians, for the Lord is the healer. The warning of fearful results from transgressing God's commands stands against the blessings of obedience, requiring people to choose whether to suffer the consequences of disobedience or enjoy the blessings of obedience.
