Deuteronomy 3:16 belongs to the fifth and last book of the Pentateuch. Within that book it stands in the first of three addresses given by Moses just before his death, occupying chapters 1 to 4:40. There Moses rehearses God's goodness to Israel, with His acts and laws and His dealings with them. That rehearsal looks back over the forty years of wandering and was given before Israel crossed the Jordan into the promised land.
