The eastern edge of Israel's allotted inheritance ran along the Jordan and the lowland beside it, extending southward from Chinnereth down to the Salt Sea. Chinnereth was the earlier name for the inland lake afterward called Lake Gennesareth or the Sea of Galilee. The Salt Sea was one of the Old Testament names for the Dead Sea. The sea of the plain was likewise the Dead Sea.
