Deuteronomy 30:10
If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
Abundant blessing is conditional on hearkening to the voice of the LORD, keeping His commandments and His statutes which are written in the book of the law, and turning to Him with all the heart and with all the soul. The commandment to be kept is not hidden or far off, not in heaven or beyond the sea needing someone to go and fetch it, but very nigh in mouth and heart to be done. When that condition is met He makes His people plenteous in every work of the hand and in the fruit of the body and of cattle and of land for good, and again rejoices over them for good as He rejoiced over their fathers.
Obedience is a choice set before them that day between life and death, good and evil, blessing and cursing, with heaven and earth called as witness. To love the LORD, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and statutes and judgments brings life and multiplying and blessing in the land to be possessed. They and their seed may live by loving and obeying and cleaving to Him who is their life and length of days for dwelling in the land sworn to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. If the heart turns away so as not to hear and to be drawn to worship and serve other gods, they will surely perish and not prolong their days on the land.
The same word speaks to backsliders living in 1897 just as to Israel who had chosen to serve Him, calling them to return to the Lord without delay in whole-hearted obedience. On that return is the promise of Jesus to reveal in humanity the character He wishes each to reveal, and of increasing grace to them.
It gives principles plainly defined from the pillar of cloud that still bind His people, especially men in responsible positions at the heart of the work, meaning light and truth in heart and soul and conversion that practices the truth. Having great light requires walking in the light, and failure to do so insults God and abuses His honor and misrepresents Him by those called by His name. Those who take up truth without being converted keep old hereditary and cultivated character, mingle their own spirit with counsel and action, pervert principle, and confederate to do what God has expressly forbidden, until justice and mercy and love for God and man fall in the streets and equity cannot enter.
