Deuteronomy 31:29
For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.
The verse belongs to the closing chapters of Deuteronomy, which bring the book to the end of Moses' life. It warns that after Moses' death Israel would utterly corrupt itself and turn aside from the way which had been commanded, doing evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke Him to anger through the work of its hands, so that evil would befall the people in the latter days. The surrounding chapter presents the law that Moses wrote as placed beside the ark to stand as a lasting witness against the people.
It is a remarkable prediction given a little before Moses' death foretelling Israel's future apostasy and calamity. That foretelling has been fulfilled in the apostasies and numberless calamities that have befallen the Jewish nation since the death of Moses. The verse also shows that the gift of the literal land of Canaan to Israel as their seed for a heritage was the second blessing included in the promissory covenant made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
