Deuteronomy 32:14
Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape. Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape.
The verse stands in a song made out of God's dealings with Israel in the past. God commanded Moses to make and frame that song from those events. It was set up as waymarks lest the history of the past be forgotten, that parents might teach it to their children and keep God's care and goodness in remembrance. Memorials were to be gathered and kept in sight, so that when children inquired the whole story could be repeated and His providential dealings and marked goodness and mercy in His care and deliverance kept in mind and often repeated. The same song also prophetically foreshadows future events, including the final victory of the faithful when Christ returns in power and glory.
It presents God as the Fountain of life and power, whose work for His chosen people should inspire every heart with thanksgiving. He can make the wilderness a fruitful field for the people who keep His commandments for the glory of His name. He desires His obedient children to claim His blessing and to come before Him with praise and thanksgiving in stronger expression, showing they know they have reason for joy and gladness, and He is grieved that so little praise is offered. For this generation He has wrought as a wonder-working God, whose past history and wonderful works are to be brought often before young and old with recounting of His goodness and praise for them.
