Deuteronomy 32:8

When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

When the descendants of Adam were separated, the Most High assigned the nations their inheritances and set their boundaries in relation to the number of the children of Israel. Together with verses 7 and 9, the verse belongs to Moses' reminder that God formed and established His people and then cared for them as His inheritance. The next verse identifies Israel, or Jacob, as the Lord's own portion and allotted inheritance. The verses that follow describe how the Lord found Jacob in the wilderness and guided, taught, led, instructed, and guarded him.

The verse belongs to a sacred song recounting God's past dealings with His people that also foreshadows future events, including the final victory of the faithful when Christ comes again in power and glory. The song was commanded by God to be framed from the events of Israel's history so that parents would teach them to their children and the waymarks set up in His dealings with ancient Israel would not be forgotten, to be often repeated and kept in mind by young and old. The song gathers memorials of God's providential dealings and marked goodness and mercy in His care and deliverance of His chosen people, giving reason for joy and gladness and stronger praise and thanksgiving, because God is the fountain of life and power who can make the wilderness a fruitful field for the people who keep His commandments for the glory of His name.
