Deuteronomy 33:23
And of Naphtali he said, O Naphtali, satisfied with favour, and full with the blessing of the LORD: possess thou the west and the south. And of Naphtali he said, O Naphtali, satisfied with favour, and full with the blessing of the LORD: possess thou the west and the south.
Deuteronomy 33:23 belongs to Moses's blessing of the tribes in Deuteronomy 33, to the prophecies concerning the tribes set within that chapter. That blessing is a song concerning Israel, one of two marvelous songs of Moses that close Deuteronomy, standing together with the account of the death of Moses as great prophet and mighty leader. As a song it preserves blessed truths about God and recalls His mercy and goodness. It is rich in symbols, historical reference, tender petition, triumphant faith, and joyful anticipation.
As farewell blessings on the twelve tribes, the passage depicts the fruits of each tribe's character. The blessing parallels Jacob's dying prophecy and is to be studied side by side with it to trace its fulfillment in the later history of the tribes. It stands in Moses's tenth discourse, covering 33:2-29.
That tenth discourse belongs within his second giving or repetition of the law and rehearsal of God's doings and law to Israel before he laid down his work to another. It stands in the last book of the Pentateuch, written by Moses in the eleventh month of the fortieth year.
