Deuteronomy 33:29
Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places.
This closing word ends Moses's last inspired prophetic address to Israel, given after he had blessed each tribe separately, and it belongs to the closing chapter of Deuteronomy put into verse to be sung by the children of Israel. It was to be taught to children and sung with musical instruments as they traveled through the wilderness.
It proclaims Israel happy, blessed, incomparable and without equal, unlike any other people, because Israel is a people saved by the Lord. God himself is the shield of help and the sword of excellency, meaning He is Israel's protection, refuge and dwelling-place, help and strength in battle, and the source of strength, honor, victory and triumph. He is the eternal, self-existent One, the everlasting God from everlasting to everlasting embracing past, present and future, whose everlasting arms are underneath His people, and as refuge He thrusts out the enemy from before them with the command to destroy. So Israel dwells in safety alone as the fountain of Jacob, under the eternal God and the everlasting arms, with strength equal to days, in a fruitful land of corn and wine whose heavens drop dew from heaven.
Their enemies shall be found liars to them, meaning the enemies' claims against Israel will be exposed as false and proved false, and the enemies will be subdued and overthrown while Israel triumphs over them and treads their high places and strongholds underfoot, magnifying God's majesty and Israel's high standing. This honor, security and exalted position would continue only as Israel obeyed God, lived in obedience to God's law, relied on His strength and took hold of His strength. Israel failed to fulfill God's purpose and so failed to receive the blessings that might have been theirs.
Its singing was meant to keep the people cheerful and cheering their journey with praise and rejoicing rather than murmuring and to relieve the monotony of pilgrim travel, and its lessons were entertaining yet profitable and instructive, encouraging to youth and to entire families. Joseph and Daniel, Moses and Elisha show the results of the true plan of living, and like faithfulness today will produce like results, so the verse is assurance of the preciousness of God's care.
