And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,
No prophet has since arisen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He also held a unique place even among those who had lived before him, as one greatly honored by God. Indeed he was honored above all other mortals. To be known face to face meant God gave him many revelations and spoke with him directly and personally, as a person speaks with a friend.
Although God talked with him face to face, he did not see the divine glory fully revealed. Yet he was permitted to see the Father's bright light and glory. His unequaled distinction was shown in the signs and wonders God sent him to perform and in the mighty power and great awe he displayed before all Israel. His close knowledge of God grew through his years in the wilderness, a forty-year desert training that formed his experience and prepared him for his work as Israel's leader.
When called he felt incapable and was slow of speech and timid, but he trusted God and obeyed, and God blessed him and fitted him for his great mission. His exceptional standing went with reverence for what is right, integrity, and understanding of the sacred value of God's law, and he pointed Israel to God as the source of its wisdom and power. He served as Israel's mediator, often standing between the people and God's anger, and when God threatened to destroy Israel he pleaded for their forgiveness and even offered to have his own name blotted out for their sake.
