And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.
Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eye was not dimmed and his natural force was not abated, with eyesight remaining clear, bodily strength undiminished, mind firm and intellect clear. From the top, the highest point of Pisgah, God opened the promised land of Canaan before him so that he could fully view the whole land spread out before him as the promised home of Israel. In that view, pictured as a second Eden, he realized and understood the rich blessings Israel would enjoy through faithful obedience to God's commandments. He was also shown Christ's first coming, rejection and death, Christ's second coming, and the resurrection of the righteous.
He went up to the top of Pisgah alone, since it was God's will for no one to go with him, and stood there in the presence of God and heavenly angels. He had to die there on the mountain because his mistake and disobedience at the rock, taking to himself the glory due to God when he smote the rock, brought the sentence that he would not enter the promised land. Had he remained steadfast and faithful, God would have brought him into the promised land and then translated him to heaven without seeing death, but having failed he passed through death. After he had viewed Canaan to his satisfaction, he lay down like a tired warrior to rest, and sleep came upon him in the peaceful sleep of death.
God's angels took his body and buried him. He was buried in the valley where Israel could never find him, and the burial was kept secret to prevent the people from sinning by committing idolatry over his body. By sinning and dying he came under the power of Satan and the dominion of death. Because his vigor was unabated his body had not yet seen corruption, and before it decayed Michael, the Son of God, soon gave him life again and raised him from the dead over Satan's claim to his body, taking him to heaven with a resurrected, glorified body. Joshua took his place as leader.
