Moses Lays Hands on Joshua Above the Promised Landby emmanuel_higgins

Deuteronomy 34:9

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.

Joshua the son of Nun was appointed to succeed Moses and lead Israel into the promised land. His appointment was a solemn consecration as leader. The succession happened because Moses was forbidden to enter the promised land on account of his mistake.

Joshua was qualified to lead because he had served Moses and knew the character of Israel. With Caleb he had given a faithful report that encouraged Israel to enter Canaan in trust in God. He was to lead Israel as a faithful shepherd.

Moses laying his hands upon him accompanied his being full of the spirit of wisdom. The children of Israel accepted Joshua, hearkening unto him and doing as the Lord had commanded Moses. Joshua was charged to bring the people in with the assurance that God would be with him. The Lord promised to grant the conquest if Joshua faithfully followed the divine requirements, and the assurance of divine guidance and support relieved Joshua's fears about the responsibility. As the people followed Joshua, Israel's coming victories were to be kept before them.
