Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.
God showed Israel His mighty acts so they would know that the Lord alone is God and there is none else beside Him. He did this by bringing them out of the iron furnace of Egypt with signs, wonders, war, a mighty hand and great terrors, and by letting them hear His voice speaking from heaven and out of the fire on earth and still live. He gave this revelation because He loved their fathers and chose their seed, to drive out nations greater than they and give them the land for an inheritance. The Lord He is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath, so wisdom and honor belong to Him and not to human beings, and making law is His prerogative alone over all kings and rulers. Knowing Him means strictly obeying all His commandments from greatest to least, including keeping His sanctified Sabbath as the binding memorial of creation, with well-being and prolonged days to those who keep His statutes.
God's Revelation to Israel
Unto Israel it was shown by God's own acts that they might know that the Lord, He is God, and that He alone is God with none else beside Him and no other god existing beside Him. He made this known by deliberately displaying His power in taking them out from the midst of another nation, from the iron furnace of Egypt, by temptations, signs, wonders, war, a mighty hand, a stretched-out arm, and great terrors. He further made it known by causing a people to hear His voice speaking from heaven for their instruction and showing His great fire upon earth, letting them hear His voice speaking out of the midst of the fire and yet live.
He gave this revelation because He loved their fathers and chose their seed after them, to bring them out in His sight, to drive out from before them nations greater and mightier than they, and to bring them in to give them the land for an inheritance. The declaration belongs to the setting of the Lord's appearance at Sinai, the giving of His law, and the promises made to Israel if they would obey His commandments. It therefore calls those who would be God's covenant-keeping people to study the whole chapter with care and to obey the law proclaimed at Sinai, including keeping the true Sabbath holy.
The Lord Alone Is God
The Lord is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath and there is none else, and this is to be known and considered in the heart. Knowing Him means keeping His statutes and His commandments, that it may go well and that days may be prolonged upon the earth which the Lord gives forever. The whole chapter is to be studied today, warning leaders of God's people that God will vindicate His word if they depart from His commandments, as He did when Israel disobeyed and only two of the adults who left Egypt entered Canaan while the rest died in the wilderness.
Wisdom and honor belong to God and not to human beings, for the Lord alone is God with no other beside Him. Giving glory to Him rather than to human instruments is the honor due this truth, and taking glory for oneself or giving it to human instruments affronts God.
As the only God He is supreme over all kings and rulers on the earth, so making law is His prerogative only. No human attempt to show supremacy above Him can succeed, and the man of sin who thinks to change times and laws cannot change God's law. There is no excuse for accepting his Sabbath in place of God's sanctified memorial of creation which stays binding.
No influence from Satan is from heaven even when received as if coming from heaven, so the genuine must be distinguished from the spurious. Satan brings his craftiness to bear on human minds with deceptive guile, deceptive theories, and deceptive influences that ensnare many souls before it is seen that they are not from God but from the enemy of all righteousness, and distinguishing them is a perplexity because deception steals in unawares. Just so it stole into the heavenly courts where Satan sought to undermine confidence in God's government, desired the place occupied by Christ in order to take the place of God, adroitly presented suggestions to angels, left insinuations in their minds to develop, originated their doubts, and had them presented as the opinions of many. The warning sounding down to this time is to beware of allowing him to enter, to remain true to God without gathering glory to self, and to remain led by His Spirit rather than changing leaders to another spirit under the crookedness and subtlety of the serpent's guile.
Those to whom God has revealed Himself as God are the people of His care and must improve upon the great sacrifice He made in giving Jesus, His only begotten Son. He sent Jesus into the world to come up in humanity so that humanity might grasp the divinity of Christ and have no excuse for sin. Every sinful soul can repent, and when humanity grasps divinity, humanity and divinity combined work out freedom from all the corruptions that are in the world, so lust cannot overcome those who connect humanity with divinity, and this is the very work now before them.
Covenant Obedience and Application
Knowing God means keeping all His commandments, statutes and directions strictly, from the greatest to the least. There is no vindication for any soul who continues in transgression and sin. Truth practiced in the life, in words and in actions, is the test by which every person is to be judged.
The directions in Deuteronomy 4 are sacred truth spoken by the voice of God from the pillar of cloud, telling what to do and what not to do. They are expressions of the mind of the infinite God and principles of His law that never lose their force, with every word to be cherished and preached. They are to be acted out in principle in all religious service toward God and toward one another, by loving as brethren, doing no injustice, and always showing liberality, tenderness, compassion and true courtesy. All who depart from His word in their actions misrepresent His character.
Keeping His statutes and His commandments brings well-being and prolonged days upon the earth He gives forever, for them and for their children after them. Disobedience brings the fulfillment of His spoken word against disobedience. This was shown when Israel disobeyed in the wilderness and only two of the adults who left Egypt entered Canaan while the rest died in the wilderness. The whole chapter is to be studied today as a warning to leaders of His people that God will vindicate His word if they depart from His commandments.
Deuteronomy 4 to 8 shows what God required of His ancient people that they might be a holy people unto Himself. It is to be studied with profit now because the world must stand before the Judge of all the earth to answer for deeds. This is the time of investigation, when before the day of God's great final review every character will have been investigated and every case decided for eternity.
Israel was to learn that the Lord alone is God through His guidance in the wilderness. Parents were to teach it to their children so they would know Him, fear and honor Him as their Leader even in hard circumstances, and pass on this knowledge. The people could depend on Him to carry them safely through. God also established ordinances to keep Himself in their remembrance, as a special safeguard and blessing for the younger members of the congregation. Knowing God and understanding His claims is of the highest consequence, including for the members of a family.
The truth that the Lord alone is God calls His people to serve Him faithfully and take their stand for the God of Israel. They must understand His purpose for His work and carry it out. They must put away unbelief toward the plans and directions given them and stop exalting human judgment above them, because that unbelief and exalting of human judgment has wasted time and valuable experience. They must search His Word and walk in His ways, and study and heed the prophecies of Isaiah, trusting Him to perform His part when they do theirs.
Deuteronomy 4 shows the very work specified to be done in these last days, to be walked in as light shining in strong, steady rays. That work is practical medical missionary service in which belief in the Word is put into works, faith and works are combined, and students are educated to do service for the Lord. It stands in contrast to carelessly neglecting light, failing to walk in the light as bidden, and not setting a right example. The Lord will give His Spirit and favor to those who will do this work.
