Deuteronomy 4:42
That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live: That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:
The provision is that one who kills a neighbor unawares and without having hated him in time past may flee to one of the cities of refuge and live. It stands in the setting of God giving Israel His law, calling them to keep His commandments with the promise that obedience brings blessing, well-being and long life.
It belongs to the instruction in Deuteronomy 4-8 showing what God required of His ancient people in order that they might be a holy people to Himself. It belongs to sacred directions expressing God's mind that are to be cherished and acted on in principle toward God and toward one another, so that departing from them misrepresents God's character. It belongs to the instruction in Deuteronomy 4-11 that all need in order to understand God's dealings with His people, whose lessons are important for both Israel and people of the present.
It is to be studied with profit now because the day of God's great final review is near, when the people of this world must stand before the Judge of all the earth and every character will have been investigated and every case decided for eternity in the present time of investigation. It means much to every soul carrying responsibilities in sanitarium work, with its directions from the greatest to what may seem the least to be carefully observed. It calls leaders and workers to move forward on a higher plane and after a more sacred order, to purify the soul from commonness, to set a holy example in word and deportment before children and households, and to render consecrated loving service with all the heart and soul in keeping God's commandments and statutes for good.
