Deuteronomy 4:43

Deuteronomy 4:43 belongs to the fourth chapter of Deuteronomy, which is to be studied as a whole and not in isolated fragments. Within that chapter special heed belongs to settling it in the heart that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath and there is none else. The same chapter commands keeping His statutes and His commandments, so that it may go well with the hearer and with children after, and that days may be prolonged upon the earth the Lord gives forever. Together with the eighth and eleventh chapters, its lesson of blessing for obeying the commandments and curse for turning aside to other gods belongs as truly to the present as it did to Israel.
Its word was verified in the history of disobedient Israel, when of all the adults who left Egypt only two entered Canaan while the rest died in the wilderness. That outcome stands as proof that disobedience forfeits the promised prolonged possession. It also warns that the Lord will vindicate His word if leaders depart from His commandments.
