Deuteronomy 6:12

Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

The verse belongs to what God required of His ancient people in Deuteronomy 4-8 that they might be a holy people unto Himself. It warns Israel, when the Lord brings them into the land sworn to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and they have eaten and are full, to beware lest they forget the Lord who brought them out of Egypt, from the house of bondage and slavery. The danger comes when they enjoy the good things, abundance, prosperity, comfort, and security of the promised land and Canaan.

The abundance they were to receive without laboring for it was great cities they did not build, houses full of good things they did not fill, wells they did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees they did not plant, all given by the Lord who delivered them. Receiving such abundance and security must not lead to neglect of God or forgetfulness of His deliverance and provision. At Loma Linda the promised houses full of good things calls to mind the furnished rooms and conveniences found there, which are grounds for praising God and trusting His care rather than forgetting Him when enjoying the good things He has provided.

Remembering the deliverance means gratitude expressed in continued loyalty: fearing the Lord, serving Him alone, keeping His commandments, statutes, judgments, and testimonies, swearing by His name, refusing to follow other gods of the surrounding peoples, not tempting Him as at Massah, and thereby avoiding His anger and destruction. The land is theirs only on condition of obedience to the law of God, and forgetting the Lord and His covenant means facing Him as a consuming fire and a jealous God, so that if they do evil in His sight they will soon utterly perish from the land beyond Jordan. The safeguard is to keep God's requirements constantly in the heart and before the eyes as a sign on the hand and frontlets between the eyes, to teach them diligently to children and grandchildren all their lives by talking of them at home and on the way and when lying down and rising up, and to write them on house posts and gates, remembering and obeying them continually in the household and being kept from every false way.

Parents are to read and follow the fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters of Deuteronomy in training their children from infancy to form characters that meet God's approval, taking every precaution to prevent objectionable traits of character by controlling themselves for the sake of God as Creator and Redeemer and preparing themselves for the present and the future life. The requirement in Deuteronomy 4-8, including not forgetting the Lord who delivered them from bondage, is to be studied now with profit as preparation. The world is nearing the day of God's great final review when all must stand before the Judge of all the earth to answer for their deeds, and the present is the time of investigation when every character will have been investigated and every case decided for eternity.
