Deuteronomy 6:23

And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.

He brought His people out of slavery and bondage in Egypt under Pharaoh in order to bring them in to give them the land He had sworn on oath to their fathers. The going out and the coming in belong together in one purposeful fulfillment of His covenant promise, for the exodus was not an end in itself but part of His purpose to give them the promised inheritance. That deliverance was wrought with a mighty hand with great signs and wonders upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh and upon all his household before their eyes, displaying His faithfulness, love and gracious dealings and placing the people in favorable circumstances to love, serve and obey Him. When sons and children ask what His testimonies, statutes and judgments mean, parents are to understand this instruction, keep this history before them, and recount bondage and deliverance as the reason for obeying His commands. Those commands were given for their good, preservation, blessing and prosperity, as part of what He required in Deuteronomy 4-8 for them to be a holy people unto Himself, which is to be studied and heeded now because the day of His great final review and investigation is near when all must stand before the Judge of all the earth to answer for their deeds.

Rescue Toward Promised Inheritance

God brought Israel out of slavery and bondage in Egypt under Pharaoh as his bondmen in order to bring them in to give them the land He had promised and sworn on oath to their fathers and ancestors. The rescue was wrought with a mighty hand after He showed great signs and wonders upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household before their eyes. The deliverance and the gift of the land were to be remembered when the history of bondage and deliverance was recounted as the explanation of and reason for obeying His commands.

Going out and coming in belong together in one purposeful fulfillment of His sworn covenant promise. The exodus was not an end in itself but part of His purpose to give Israel the promised inheritance. Rescue from bondage and entry into the promised land are one connected act in which He rescues His people and fulfills His covenant promise.

That deliverance displayed His faithfulness, love, and gracious dealings toward His chosen people. By it He placed them in favorable circumstances to love and serve Him. It was wrought so that they might obey His law, with His commands given for their good and preservation and with obedience to His statutes connected to blessing and prosperity.

Parents Teach Children Obedience

The verse is part of the instruction given through Moses to Israel, and it is the conclusion of the answer parents are to give when their son or children ask what the testimonies, statutes, and judgments mean. That answer recounts the history of bondage and deliverance, that Israel were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt and the Lord brought them out with a mighty hand after showing great signs and wonders upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household before their eyes, bringing them out in order to bring them in to give the land sworn to the fathers. Parents are to understand this instruction and be ready to speak it, teaching it to their children as among the Scriptures they should teach them. This history was to be kept before their children so they would receive correct impressions of the Lord's dealings with His chosen people, and the whole chapter containing it is a lesson to be studied.

Their deliverance from slavery in Egypt in order to bring them into the land promised to their ancestors showed God's faithfulness and gracious dealings, and was to be remembered when parents explained His commands to their children. Rescue from bondage and entry into the promised land belong together in God's fulfillment of His sworn covenant promise, a history parents were to recount to their children as the reason for obeying God's commands. Israel was to tell this story to their children as the explanation of God's commands, and He wrought this deliverance so that they might obey His law.

Those commands were for their good and preservation. The surrounding instruction connects obedience to His statutes with blessing and prosperity, presenting deliverance and the gift of the land as fulfillment of God's sworn promise.

Holy Living Before Judgment

Deuteronomy 6:23 belongs to the instruction found in Deuteronomy 4-8, which sets forth what God required of His ancient people in order that they might be a holy people unto Himself. That larger instruction defines the terms of consecrated living under His covenant.

It is to be studied now, to be read with profit and to be heeded, because the day of God's great final review is near. In that day the people of this world must stand before the Judge of all the earth to answer for their deeds. The present is the time of investigation, when before that day every character will have been investigated and every case decided for eternity.
