Deuteronomy 7:16
And thou shalt consume all the people which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee. And thou shalt consume all the people which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.
The command is to consume or destroy all the peoples whom the Lord delivers into hand, to let the eye have no pity upon them, and to refuse to serve their gods, because serving those gods will be a snare. This instruction is about keeping God's commands and remaining devoted to Him in order to become a holy people belonging to God.
The verse is to be read and studied as part of Deuteronomy 7:8-18 and all of chapters seven and eight. Standing with the whole of Deuteronomy 7 and with Deuteronomy 1 and 8, it is present words and admonition for God's people today, those in the last days upon whom the ends of the world are come. Its lessons about keeping God's commandments are to be taught and obeyed, and prosperity depends on strict obedience to every principle it lays down. God's people must follow the Lord's direction rather than their own judgment. The verse is joined to the Lord rising up as in Mount Perazim and as in the valley of Gibeon to do His work, His strange work, and to the consumption determined upon the whole earth.
Belonging to the instruction in Deuteronomy 5, 6, and 7, the verse is for parents to read and obey in training their children from infancy to form characters that meet God's approval. It means parents are to take every precaution to prevent objectionable traits of character in their children. Parents are to control themselves for the sake of God as Creator and Redeemer in order to prepare for the present life and the future life and admission into the city of God.
