Deuteronomy 7:22

And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

God would dispossess the nations before Israel by gradual stages and not by consuming them all at once. The restraint was for their own protection, lest with the land suddenly emptied the beasts of the field should multiply and come upon them. In this measured advance was seen a guidance that paced the blessing to their safety.

To grasp what was required of the ancient people that they might be a holy people to Himself, this chapter is to be studied along with Deuteronomy 4 through 8. Together with chapters 5 and 6 it is instruction for parents to read in training children from infancy to form characters that meet His approval. That training calls for every precaution to keep objectionable traits of character from growing up in them. The words of this chapter are also to be read with profit in getting ready for the day of the great final review, when the world must stand before the Judge of all the earth. That day is now at hand in the present time of investigation, when every character will have been examined and every case decided for eternity.
