The Lord's own assessment of Israel was that they were a stiffnecked people. Their rebellion was such that He several times purposed to destroy them. Moses interceded for them so earnestly that He graciously spared them. Moses then used that sparing, together with the great acts and miracles done against Pharaoh and all the land of Egypt which their own eyes had seen, to charge them to keep all the commandments that day, so that they would be strong and go in and possess the land they were going to possess.
