Deuteronomy 9:19
For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me at that time also. For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me at that time also.
The verse looks back to occasions when Israel's rebellion moved God to purpose to destroy them, and Moses stood afraid before that anger and hot displeasure. This happened not once but several times, yet each time Moses interceded so earnestly that the Lord listened to him at that time also. In gracious answer to that pleading God spared them instead of carrying out their destruction. Moses set this sparing mercy alongside the great acts against Pharaoh and all Egypt which their own eyes had seen, and used both to urge Israel to keep all the commandments, so that they would be strong and go in and possess the land.
