Ecclesiastes 1:13
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith. And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
Solomon's giving of his heart to seek and search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven stands as the pattern of human curiosity in every age reaching out for the tree of knowledge. The search is not humble inquiry but ambitious pursuit of the kind of knowledge that brings glory and self-exaltation and supremacy. It is the same ambition by which Adam and Eve broke through God's restraint to gain the forbidden knowledge of what transgression brings, leaving the sons of men with a practical, experiential knowledge of evil. Those who pursue it think they are plucking the most essential fruit, yet they find it altogether vanity and nothingness beside the science of true holiness that opens the gates of the city of God. In contrast to that forbidden tree, Christ has planted the tree of life, whose leaves are for the healing of the nations.
