Ecclesiastes 1:9
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
There is nothing new under the sun, an old hyperbole that points to how ancient sayings and archaeological discoveries reveal remarkable wisdom, genius, skill and insight in antiquity. Beside those achievements of the past, modern progress can look small, yet the saying stands as hyperbole rather than a literal denial that inventions or discoveries can be new. History is being repeated, so that which has been will be again.
All that God has planned in His mind and touched with His hand in past history is recorded as lessons for admonition for those upon whom the end of the world has come. Words of approval or disapproval spoken by Christ in the Old Testament sound down the line to the present time. Obedience to God's voice spoken in creation and through holy people of old therefore involves present spiritual and eternal interests, because the Lord means what He says and says what He means.
The same truth comes as a message from heaven to ministers, physicians, and workers connected with institutions, calling them to consider carefully the condition of the churches. It also shows that fanatical people taking extreme views will always appear alongside genuine spiritual work as the normal repeated pattern. Their presence is no reason to stand off and denounce the whole work, which must still be tested and judged by its fruit.
